Warren John "Red" Jevnikar, of Chardon, died Dec. 15, 2012. He was 88.
Warren was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Cleveland. He graduated from Euclid Shore High School, Class of 1943, and then served as a Quartermaster 3rd Class in the Pacific Theatre, U.S. Navy, during World War II.
After the war, he attended Kent State University, graduating in 1949.
He worked for the former Bestone in Chardon, managed the former Geauga Theatre and the Hazelwood Drive Inn, and retired as a self-employed manufacturer’s representative.
Warren was a member of St. Luke Episcopal Church in Chardon and the Euclid Rotary Club.
He was inducted into the Euclid Sports “Hall of Fame” in 1996.
“Red” and his wife, Jane, enjoyed boating and fishing, especially the annual trips to Rapid Seven in Canada.
His voice could be heard helping John Brindo calling, “Ham, Ham, Ham,” for the Chardon Fire Department during the Maple Festival and assisting with their fall clambakes.
He was an avid fan of Chardon High School sports. During the 1960’s, he helped the boosters club in securing new football stands and building a new concession stand.
Survivors include daughters, Laura (Jeremy) Welsh of Annapolis, Md., and Beth (John) Wilson of Oakmont, Pa.; son, David W. Jevnikar of Chardon; and grandchildren, Emily Welsh and Lauren and Alexander Wilson.
Warren was preceded in death by his wife, Janette (nee Brinkman), whom he married at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Cleveland Heights, on Nov. 22, 1947; and his parents, John and Phyllis (nee Clapham) Jevnikar.
A Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 27 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Chardon Municipal Cemetery.
