Jerry J.H. Smetana, of Burton, Ohio passed away Jan. 3, 2013 at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. He was 74.
He was born on Aug. 14, 1938, in Cleveland, son of Yarro and Marie (nee Zika) Smetana.
Jerry was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1956-1958 in Germany.
Jerry married Elsie Carol Seddon on Oct. 10, 1959. They were married 53 loving years and lived in this area most of their lives.
He worked 25 years for Black and Decker, and then he was a manufacturing supervisor for 20 years at TRW, retiring in 1999. He was also part owner of Montville Machine.
Jerry was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, a church trustee, Sunday school supervisor and active with the church choir.
He was an advisor and founder of Good Golly Goat 4-H Club for 20 years and a junior fair coordinator.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing and farming. His greatest love was his family.
Jerry will be missed dearly by his friends and family, including his wife, Elsie Carol; daughters, Tammy (Paul) Fisher of Burton, Wendy (Mark) Thomas of Montville Township, Becky (Harvey) Weaver of Huntsburg Township and Misty (Stefan) Drotleff of Avon Lake; son-in-law, Bob Lederle of Newbury Township; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson; sisters, Sharon Smith of Hanover, Pa., and Linda Anderson of Cedar Fall, Iowa; and his brother, Robert (Linda) Smetana of Burton.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Ann Lederle, who died Dec. 22, 2010; parents; and siblings Jim Smetana and Lois Jean Smetana.
A Celebration of Life will be held 12:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at Peace Lutheran Church, 12686 Bass Lake Road, Munson Township.
A gathering of friends and family will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. until the service time.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 1120 G St., NW, Suite 700, Washington, D.C. 20005.
