An old soldier returned home on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012. Ray Theo Stonecipher, age 94, World War II combat veteran, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, business leader, village councilman and lover of all children — a caring human being — went home to be with his wife of 69 years, Madelyn (Bredeson), who had died the previous July, 2011, and his Lord, Jesus Christ.
Born in Nora, Ky., on July 26, 1918, Ray lived most of his life in Chardon, where he was a plant manager at the Chardon Rubber Company, an elder in his church, a Rotarian and a village councilman.
His pride was in his family and in doing things right — knowing the price that had been paid by he and fellow soldiers for a life of peace.
He maintained a disciplined life, loved cooking, always building, fixing, cleaning, or helping, with a warmth that showed daily. Ray never met a stranger.
He initially retired to Worthington, but wanting to be close to grandchildren, relocated to London, where he passed at his home on Sunday.
Ray is survived by three children, Tim, an estate planning and elder law attorney in London, Sharon, retired PhD geologist residing in Loveland, Colo., and Cathy (Katter), retired teacher of Delaware, Ohio; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
An open funeral service will be conducted at London Baptist Church by Pastor and retired Master Sergeant Steve Kirby on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m., followed by interment at Sunset Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any veteran’s association.
