The Hostess Cake Company has been referred to as the sweetest come-back ever!
The company was founded in 1925, introducing their famous Twinkies in 1930. It was not until 1967 that Hostess introduced the Ho Ho.
Through the years there have been many recipes to mimic these delicious treats. This recipe was from a good friend of mine several years ago and is a favorite of my family.

1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
Mix together dry ingredients, and then add:
1 tsp. vanilla
1/3 cup oil
1 tsp. vinegar
1 cup water
Pour into greased and floured 9×13-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until done. Cool cake completely before applying filling.
When cooled, I cut the cake into equal thirds, trim edges, and then I put filling between the two layers.
Cook 1 1/4 cups of milk and 5 Tbs. flour until it slightly thickens, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and cool completely.
In a separate bowl, beat 2 sticks of butter, 1/2 cup shortening and 1 cup sugar. Beat with electric mixer for 5 minutes. Add cooled milk and flour mixture and beat for an additional 10-15 minutes. Be sure sugar is dissolved. Refrigerate.
Melt 1 stick of butter and 3 (3 oz.) squares of unsweetened chocolate. Combine 1 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar, 1 egg, 1 tsp. vanilla and 2 Tbs. water. Add to melted chocolate mixture. Pour on top of cooled cake. (I make this frosting more like a glaze with a little more water so it will pour.)
