Geauga Dairymen participated in the Ohio Maple Producers Association’s Maple Madness on March 15.
The club started at the Farview Farm Sugarhouse owned by Jim and Penny Timmons. Members toured the converted granary to learn how sap is turned into syrup with the use of reverse osmosis. A live camera showed the club where the sap was collected deep in the woods. Members also sampled the syrup and maple candy.
The second tour was at Sugarbush Creek Farm. The tour started off with a wagon ride back to the woods where a short walk in the woods showed the members the sap collection pipeline, collection tanks, reverse osmosis system and evaporator. The club also saw how Indians and pioneers made maple syrup. The tour ended with a sample of maple syrup.
Both farms allowed members to get a first hand look at the process of making maple syrup.
