Alzheimers CARE Training

Families in Lake, Geauga, Portage and Ashtabula counties are invited to attend a free Alzheimers CARE training workshop that will be offered in recognition of World Alzheimers Month. The session will be held on Oct. 17 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Home Instead Senior Care office, 705 Oakwood St., Suite 101 in Ravenna

Developed by Home Instead Senior Care, the Alzheimers or Other Dementias CARE program incorporates an innovative, hands-on approach to help families deal with the difficult behavioral changes that often are associated with Alzheimers disease or other dementias.

During the workshop, program experts will teach caregivers how to manage behaviors, encourage engagement and care for themselves while caring for their loved one.

National Recovery Month

Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers will host open houses celebrating National Recovery Month Sept. 27, from 2-5 p.m. at all four LGRC locations: Chardon Outpatient, 209 Center St., Unit E, Chardon; Mentor Outpatient, 9083 Mentor Ave., Mentor; Oak House, Women’s Residential Program, 796 Oak St., Painesville; and Lake House, Men’s Residential Program, 42 E. Jackson St., Painesville. The staff will provide tours of the facilities and answer questions.

Recovery Month focuses on the benefits to our whole society of prevention, treatment and recovery from substance use and mental disorders.

Depression Screening Day

The Geauga County Board of Mental Health and Recovery Services is recognizing Oct. 10 as National Depression Screening Day, which is held annually as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week in October.

Free screenings will be provided for children and adults on Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Ravenwood Mental Health Center, 12557 Ravenwood Drive, Chardon. For information about the screenings, call 440-285-3568.

Flu Shots

Lake Health is offering seasonal flu shots for $20 at the following locations:

Chardon Campus, 510 Fifth Ave., Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Clinic at Middlefield, located inside Wal-Mart Supercenter, 15050 Springdale Ave., Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.

No appointment is necessary. Individuals must be 18 years of age or older to receive the seasonal flu vaccine at our centers. The influenza vaccination is covered by Medicare.

Ortho Day

University Hospitals (UH) Geauga Medical Centers ninth annual Ortho Day will take place Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 700 Banquet & Conference Center, 700 Beta Drive in Mayfield Heights. The theme of the free community event is Lets Get Moving Fun and Fitness. Lunch will be provided.

Ortho Day will feature free health screenings and interactive educational presentations by the hospitals expert orthopaedic team. The event offers the latest information about the treatment of back pain and hip, knee and extremity problems along with latest innovations in joint surgery, rehabilitation and interventional procedures.

Bloodmobile

American Red Cross blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Donors may give every 56 days and must bring some form of photo identification and a list of all current medications.

Flu Shots Available

The Geauga County Health District has announced its adult flu clinics.

Flu shots will be available every Friday during the season starting Sept. 27 from 8:30-11 a.m. at 470 Center St., Building 8, Chardon.

The health district will also have clinics at the Geauga County Senior Center located at 12555 Ravenwood Drive in Chardon Oct. 8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and Oct. 21 from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Geauga County Health District will bill most Medicare and employee health insurance plans for the flu shot. The flu vaccinations cost $30 or $40 for high dose vaccine if they are paid for in cash. Most insurance plans accepted; bring insurance card for insurance billing.

Pregnant women must have a signed order from their obstetrician.

2013 Immunization Clinics

The Geauga County General Health District offers childrens and adolescent immunization clinics. The Health District has always provided immunizations free of charge, but federal changes are coming. For now, it is still able to provide immunizations for children through the age of 18.

Blood Pressure Screening

Help For Mental Illness

Geauga County National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers support, education and advocacy for those affected by mental illness.

NAMI Basics is a six-session course of education and support for parents of children with symptoms of mental health problems. The free class will meet six consecutive Mondays, beginning Oct. 7, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Middlefield Public Library, 16167 E. High St.

The fall session of the Peer-to-Peer education course for persons who have a mental illness begins Oct. 1 and will run from 6-8 p.m. The location will be Chardon, Chesterland or Middlefield depending on class member preference. Please specify all the locations one is able to access when registering for the free course.
