For more information, contact the park district at 440-286-9516 or visit www.geaugaparkdistrict.org.

Something’s Afoot

Geauga Park District’s newest exhibit about nature in motion, Something’s Afoot: Nature Just Can’t Stay Put, opening Nov. 1 and running through August 2014 at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

To keep experiences fresh and interesting for visitors who return again and again to the park district’s nature centers, staff and volunteers have worked together once again to develop a full array of new sights, sounds and hands-on activities.

Something’s Afoot will explore seed dispersal in plants; geological movement, showing how the movement of rock and sediments over long periods of time have resulted in our bedrock formations and various soil types; and how water moves from earth to sky and back in an endless cycle.

Children’s room activities include hands-on games and play stations exploring animal movement and animal-aided human travel such as horse and wagon and riding animals. The naturalist department has developed a wide range of programming to complement and further explore the theme throughout 2014.

Something’s Afoot will be open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Photo Show … Go!

Just as motion is the theme of Geauga Park District’s upcoming exhibit, Something’s Afoot: Nature Just Can’t Stay Put, it is also the theme of a new art display by the Park District’s camera club.

Meet the Artists: Shutterbugs Camera Club is Oct. 27 from 2-4 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

Featured photographers will be on hand to chat about their photography and participation in the club, which meets every first Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center. Their artwork will remain on display through February 2014.

Shutterbugs membership varies from school age to senior citizen and includes all skill levels: from novice with a simple point-and-shoot to professional. Meetings generally attract between 30 and 40 people.

Each meeting begins with announcements and a monthly instructional session on a variety of photography topics. Then, after a break for refreshments, members gather around a long table and take turns critiquing each other’s work (one 8×10 print per photographer).

Upcoming club programming, which is on the park districts website, includes: Competition Night: Frozen Water & People in Action on Nov. 7 and Holiday Pot Luck on Dec. 5.

Neither registration nor dues are required to get involved. Bring a piece according to the theme on the website for the critique.

A new travel basketball league is starting. It is a more competitive league where each team will travel to different Cleveland YMCA branches to play games.
