Historic Tidbit
Feb. 14, which we know as Valentine’s Day, originally was proclaimed Saint Valentine’s Day since it marked the execution of a Roman Catholic priest, Saint Valentine, by Claudius II in 270, and became a “feast day.”
Other sources state the date was a way to “Christianize” the pagan holiday of Lupercalia, a fertility festival that included boys and girls drawing names from a box and exchanging gifts.
Whatever the origin, it is now symbolized by hearts and flowers and remembering one’s beloved on Feb. 14. Happy Valentine’s Day!
