Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland has been named “Person of the Year” and given the Emerald Leader Award by Leadership Geauga County. The award is presented annually to an individual, a business or a non-profit agency that exemplifies outstanding leadership by positive contributions through volunteerism, philanthropy or innovation that impacts life in Geauga County.

Munson PTO Scholarships
Munson Elementary School PTO is offering two $500 scholarships to any Chardon High School senior who attended Munson Elementary for at least three years. Scholarship applications are available in the guidance counselor’s office at Chardon High School.

Astronomical Society Meets
The Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society extends an open invitation to its next meeting March 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Geauga Park District’s Sunnybrook Preserve Lodge, 12474 Heath Road. Following a short business meeting, there will be a monthly observation report, educational program and night sky viewing, weather permitting.

Geauga County NAMI
Geauga County National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will hold a peer support group meeting March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Geauga Board of Mental Health, 13244 Ravenna Road, Munson.
The monthly meetings provide education, support and advocacy to those affected by mental illness and their families. NAMI meetings are free and open to the public; registration is not necessary.

With the Arts
An opening reception featuring the beautiful and interesting artwork of Britta Franz, Jim Stadtlander and Diane Harto will be held March 8, from 7-9 p.m., at the West Woods in Russell Township. The artists will be there to answer questions and discuss their work.

The Mapletown Squares will host a square dance March 14, from 8-10:30 p.m., at the Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive in Munson. Caller will be John Ramsey.

Trash Pickup Days
Munson Township, with the cooperation of the Geauga County Department on Aging, will have free trash pickup April 21, 22 and 23. The event is for items not normally picked up by the weekly trash collector.
Do not call the township for information or registration.
Call the Chardon Senior Center at 440-279-2130 for information on registration and what is and is not acceptable. When registering for the service, please be sure to give the correct address.
The 2014 Lions Mane Event celebrates Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s 25th anniversary with a “Roaring Twenties Gala” April 5 at NDCL’s McGarry Gym, 13100 Auburn Road, Munson.
Volunteers are needed to help transform McGarry Gym into a Gatsbyesque party center and to help with acquisitions, package preparation and setup the week before the event. To volunteer, call Lis Olivier at 440-286-6226.
