We will be honoring the United States of America flag on Flag Day, June 14, the date the flag was adopted by Congress in 1777 from a design with a five-pointed star submitted by Betsy Griscom Ross (1752-1836) of Philadelphia. She and her four daughters were given a contract to make all American flags.
June 14 was first designated for national observance in 1895, but was never declared a legal holiday.
We will be honoring our fathers on Father’s Day, June 15. Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Wash., in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd whose father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran, was a single parent who raised six children after his wife died.
After repeated efforts by several elected officials since 1924, the third Sunday of June was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. Give your dad a hug and a kiss on his special day.
Fly the beautiful flag of our country on both days and give thanks for the great country in which we live.
