Everyone knows Oct. 31 as Halloween. Originally, it was “Hallowe’en,” preceding the church festival of Allhallows or All Saints Day on Nov. 1. “Hallow” means “holy” or “sacred” and “e’en” is the abbreviation for “evening.”
From its supernatural associations, it has always been connected with foretelling the future. In English-speaking countries, young people devote the evening to masquerading, partying, fortune telling and door-to-door trick or treating.
Have a safe and Happy Halloween!
