NDCL Artists Honored
Eight NDCL students were honored Friday evening at the Cleveland Museum of Art for their award-winning entries in the Cleveland Clinic’s eXpressions Art and Language Program.
Honored artists included senior Kelly Nieser and junior Alexandra Graham, blue ribbon awards; junior Allison Perpar and freshman Amanda Spangler, red ribbon awards; senior Michael Mandac and junior Jack Hyland, white ribbon awards; and seniors De’Aydra Duke and Perry Yert, honorable mention awards.
The artists, their families and NDCL’s art teachers attended the exhibit’s grand opening. President Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane joined them for the celebration.
The works of art and literature on display artistically interpret research studies conducted by Cleveland Clinic high school interns. Last year, seven NDCL students were selected for the Clinic’s prestigious summer internships.
“As I walked through the exhibit of 93 selected works, I took special delight in the eight award-winning entries of our art students,” Sister Jacquelyn said. “Their creative ability to integrate the scientific research of seniors Anna Zakrajsek and Mary Schneeberger and junior Nicole Babiak from their summer internships is a tribute to development and expression of their gifts.”
The eXpressions exhibition will run through March 24 at the museum. Admission to the exhibit is free.
Mock Trial Awards
Congratulations to freshman Dominique Edmonds and senior Emily Boyle for their outstanding performance in the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education’s annual Mock Trial Competition on Feb. 1. Dominique earned the Best Witness Award. For the second year in a row, Emily won the Best Attorney Award.
Special thanks go to attorneys Jeffrey Black, Nick Giegerich, Shawn Maestle and Eric Condon who helped the students prepare for the competition. Social studies teacher Alex Dowger and English teacher Vicki Frabotta advise the team.
Placement Exam, Preview Night
Potential members of the class of 2017 will have their final opportunity to take NDCL’s placement exam on Feb. 16, from 8-11 a.m. Top scorers are eligible for renewable academic and leadership scholarships. Please register online.
Prospective students and their parents are encouraged to attend NDCL’s next preview night on Feb. 20, from 6-8 p.m. Students, parents, teachers and administrators will be on hand to share the NDCL experience and to answer any questions.
For those unable to attend in February, NDCL will host another preview night on March 12 and a family open house on April 11.
Questions should be directed to Mr. Keith Corlew, director of admissions and tuition assistance.
Junior Justice Retreat
Fifty-seven members of the class of 2014 joined together to serve the community during their Junior Justice Retreat on Jan. 31. The retreat — the first of three junior retreats this semester — focused on NDCL’s core value of justice.
The students spent the day serving at six locations: Malachi House, Rose-Mary Center, New Avenues to Independence, Geauga County Department on Aging’s Chardon Senior Center, Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services and West Side Catholic Center.
“This retreat is an opportunity for students to practice the core value of justice and to experience direct ministry with those in need,” said Director of Campus Ministry Greg Welch. “We choose placements that will challenge the students to reconsider their own opportunities and how they may positively affect the lives of those they meet.”
A prayerful reflection gathering is also part of the retreat experience. In this meeting, students share with each other what placement they attended, what they learned and how this experience impacted their relationship with God and others.
