On April 19, staff and students of St. Helen School shared their love and thanks for their school volunteers who work in the library, art room, clinic, classrooms and cafeteria. Volunteers were invited to Mass at 9 a.m., where children included a special petition for their intentions.
Father Jay McPhillips, pastor of St. Helen Church invited the volunteers to the sanctuary steps for the final blessing at the end of Mass. As Fr. Jay led the blessing for the volunteers, children, faculty and staff extended their hands toward them asking God to reward their hours of generosity. Following Mass, refreshments were served with a small gift that was a token of appreciation from the children.
At St. Helen School, volunteers assist in art class to help prepare materials and offer an extra pair of hands. In the library, volunteers assist to electronically check out books, read to classes and offer students help in selecting books.
Classroom volunteers help work with individual students or prepare materials for teachers. In the clinic, nurses record illnesses or injuries and arrange for children to be sent home, if needed. Finally, in the cafeteria, helpers prepare salads, assist the manager in serving and serve as cashiers.
