Century Village Museum Celebrates Victorian Christmas
Thursday, November 29, 2012
Century Village Museum will begin the holiday season in the spirit of the 19th century for this year's Country Hearth Christmas and Christmas in the Village Dec. 1 and 2.
The celebration includes the unveiling of the second floor of the museum's legendary Hickox Brick House. The bedrooms and sitting room, furnished and decorated in the fashion of the Victorian era, will be open to the public for the first time in 20 years. The space will be open for a limited time.
The Hickox Brick House also will feature Christmas artifacts from the museum's extensive historical collections. The exhibit will display items, including a traditional dollhouse and decorated trees surrounded by toys. The house was the home of Stella Umber-field Hickox. Stella's father, Thomas Umberfield, settled in Burton in 1798. He and his family were the first permanent settlers of Geauga County.
Visitors will enjoy a sampling of cookies and have the opportunity to take home a copy of a cookie recipe dating back 200 years.
The museum's grounds and other buildings also will be decorated throughout the holiday season in conjunction with Burton Village and the Burton Chamber of Commerce.
The Hickox Brick House will be open for tours Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays, 12-4 p.m.
The Crossroads Museum Store and gift shop will be open its usual hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays, 12-5 p.m.
Century Village Museum is located at 14653 East Park St. in Burton. Call 440-834-1492 for information.
