GEAUGA PARK DISTRICT

For more information, contact the park district at 440-286-9516 or visit www.geaugaparkdistrict.org."">www.geaugaparkdistrict.org."

Sled With Friends

Don't let those sleds stay packed away all winter. Grab the gang for a fun afternoon of sledding and other snow activities in the park, not to mention a toasty lodge, warm outdoor fire and breathtaking view from the top of the hill.

The fourth annual Sledding and Snowflakes takes place Jan. 13 from 2-3:30 p.m. at Orchard Hills Park, parking lot lodge and sledding hill, 11340 Caves Road in Chesterland.

In addition to sledding, participants will see who can throw a snow snake, or a stick carved with curved ends, down a trail the farthest.

There will be free hot chocolate and snacks.

Participants must bring their own sleds and register ahead of time. Call for weather conditions as the free, all-ages program is dependent upon snow.

Drop-In Telescope Clinic

Register for an opportunity to bring in home-owned telescopes for a tune-up. Bring In Your Telescope! takes place Jan. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Observatory Park, 10610 Clay St. in Montville Township.

Observatory Park's astro-nats will help clean, configure and figure out telescopes so participants can get back to home sky watching. Observatory Park is a Silver Tier International Dark Sky Park, as well, so guests may use their telescopes on its telescope pads, which allow for electrical hook-up.

Registration is required.

Glide Here And There In The Full Moon's Light

Three opportunities exist to cross-country ski the winter landscape this season including two beneath beautiful full moons.

Skiers have the ability to ski three to four miles should consider joining a naturalist to ski The West Woods on Jan. 19 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.; Orchard Hills Park on Jan. 26 from 7-8:30 p.m.; or The Maple Highlands Trail and Buckeye Trail at Headwaters Park on Feb. 24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

All the skis become hikes if there is no snow; call 440-286-9516 after 2 p.m. on program day to check conditions. Ski rental is available in advance from Geiger's Ski & Sports Haus, 50 Shopping Plaza, Chagrin Falls, 440-247-4900.

Trails are also groomed for leisurely skiing at Orchard Hills Park and on The Maple Highlands Trail.

Who Done It?

Learn all about the winter predatory habits of fox, coyote, weasel, birds of prey and more, and then lead an outdoor investigation of actual or recreated kill sites to determine "who done it?"

Blood on the Snow: Winter Predators is Jan. 19 from 3-4:30 p.m. in the lodge at Sunnybrook Preserve, 12474 Heath Road, Chesterland.

Registration is not required.
