Temporary Park Closures For Controlled Hunts
Controlled hunting will close three public parks on several days in November, December and January.
Affected parks are The West Woods for shotgun hunting on Nov. 26, 27 and 30 and Dec. 1; The Rookery, for shotgun hunting on Dec. 15 and 16; and Observatory Park, for muzzleloader hunting on Jan. 5 and 6.
Meet John Muir
Geauga County's favorite thespian naturalist returns for an encore performance as John Muir the country's most famous naturalist, author, preservation activist and founder of the Sierra Club.
Living History: John Muir is Nov. 18 from 1:30-3 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center.
John Muir exercised much influence in setting up the National Park System and experienced many amazing hands-on experiences with nature. Tapping those resources for the most memorable stories and quotes, Geauga Park District Naturalist John Kolar will channel Mr. Muir for an indoor-outdoor program, beginning with stories, then leading a short hike down the trails of The West Woods to discover Geauga's natural wonders.
Registration is not required.
Rhyming Scavenger Hunt
Turkey Trottin' Scavenger Hunt will take place Nov. 23-25 from 1-4:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center.
Participants will embark on a free, family-friendly, fact-finding mission about turkeys by following riddles, which will bring them to the locations of paper turkey feathers with answers to turkey-related questions. Most of the clues are indoors; however, getting a breath of fresh air is always a plus.
Registration is not required.
Deck The Halls
From evergreens to icicles, the beauty of the holiday season can be seen in nature. Now, try one�s hand at making a unique ornament from natural items.
Nature's Ornaments: Make it Yourself! is Nov. 24 from 10-11:30 a.m. at The West Woods Nature Center.
Whether one is experienced and crafty or new at this sort of thing, naturalist Nora Sindelar's ornament program has something for everyone.
Registration is required for the free program.

Lake Metroparks
Twelve Days of Winter
Enjoy the life-size game board where families discover through interactive play the many things that nature gives people in winter. In addition, a craft, activity pages and scavenger hunts are fun for the whole family. Reminisce with family and friends over favorite childhood board games through a retro exhibit of classic games from the '50s, '60s and '70s.
The exhibit opens Nov. 17 at Penitentiary Glen Reservation, 8668 Kirtland Chardon Road in Kirtland. It continues daily from noon to 5 p.m. through Jan. 6. A special free activity will run from 1-3 p.m. every Saturday
