Rear, Spidalieri Should be Ashamed

How exciting to see my parents picture on the front of the Maple Leaf.

Dr. Joseph and Betty Koelliker have both worked so hard all of their lives to help preserve and maintain not only their land but the land of many others in Geauga County.

My mother served as a zoning committee member for many years in Munson.

My father practiced medicine for over 50 years, often at no charge. We are grateful to the Geauga County Commissioners for their approval of the sale of their land above Koelliker Fen, already owned by the museum, in order to further preserve a delicate area of our county.

This land will never be developed and it feeds an area of rare flora and fauna found no where else in Ohio. What a privilege to be a part of that!

However, I was very disturbed by the comments by Blake and Spidalieri.

The Geauga County Commissioners webpage is headlined Growing Geauga Greener Econonmically and Environmentally, yet both Blake and Spidalieri made comments about the environment that were shocking to me during my parents presentation at the commissioners meeting.

Why are we throwing money at something that’s going to be left alone? The frogs are going to live there ever after, Spidalieri said when informed of the habitat in this delicate area.

Frog survival, sir, is critical to all of us and this comment is an example of mans arrogance toward the environment. Shame on you Spidalieri. I will remember that next time you run for a Greener Geauga Office.

Blake said, Your precious vegetation is a weed to me and If you want to see a ravine, go to Big Creek Park.

Wow, I am speechless, how arrogant for a man who lives in a rural county. Blake, we all will remember that comment the next time you run for office.

Suggestions that my parents donate the land rather than sell were rather presumptuous and to be honest, demeaning to my parents shame again on you.

I would never suggest that you donate your salary back to the county.

I love Geauga County and its greenery. I am proud to be part of preserving and maintaining this rural atmosphere.

It seems Blake and Spidalieri are determined to develop every inch they can gain a tax dollar from in our county. I believe we all would be wise to remember this attitude next time we are asked who do we want to be our commissioners.
