Grendell to Discuss Geauga Parks

Geauga County Probate Court Judge Tim Grendell is inviting all county residents to meet with him, individually, on Feb. 7, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Geauga County Probate/Juvenile Court, 231 Main Street, 2nd Floor, Courthouse Annex, Chardon, to discuss the county parks.

Residents can call Cheryl Koncler, 440-279-1840, at the court to reserve a time to meet with the judge.

Ed and Sandy Buckles, who Grendell calls the “leaders of park environmentalist group” Protect Geauga Parks, said on the advice of their attorney they would not meet with Grendell in a judicial setting.

“His offer to meet with us in court along with his erratic behavior with elected county individuals does not engender trust,” the Buckles told the Geauga County Maple Leaf.

They added, “It is unfortunate that citizens must get legal council to raise concerns with elected officials without the implied threat of the probate court taking action.”

Newbury Trio Arrested for Heroin Geauga County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested three Newbury Township men for possession of heroin on Jan. 2.

Michael J. Modic 23, Anthony R. Martin Jr., 26, and Gabriel P. Kovach, 21, were arrested at the Speedway gas station at the northeast corner of Kinsman and Auburn roads.

Deputies were searching for Modic as part of a theft investigation when they located him at a Newbury gas station, Lt. John Hiscox, public information officer for the sheriff’s office, said.

“While the dep-uties were speaking with Modic, they observed Martin and Kovach acting suspicious and making movements indicating that they were trying to conceal contraband,” Hiscox said.

Modic and Martin subsequently were arrested after they were found to be in possession of heroin and syringes, the lieutenant added.

Deputies then located heroin in Kovach’s possession and he was arrested.

All three men were charged with possession of drugs, fifth-degree felonies.

They were arraigned in Chardon Municipal Court on Monday.

Judge Terri Stupica set Modic’s bond at $50,000 cash or surety. Kovach is being held on a $25,000 10 percent cash or surety bond and Martin on a $10,000 10 percent cash or surety bond.

Modic also was charged with misdemeanor theft. A pretrial in his case was continued to March 6.

Preliminary hearings for both Kovach and Martin were continued to Jan. 21.
