At least two individuals broke into a number of vehicles early Monday morning in southeast Newbury Township stealing loaded handguns, a GPS and a stun gun among other items, according to the Geauga County Sheriff’s Jan. 20 blotter.

Two vehicles at 15554 Park View Drive were opened about 2 a.m. and two loaded handguns were stolen. According to the report. Lt. John Hiscox said one was a .380 Smith and Wesson and the other was a 9 mm.

“Guns are a hot item,” he said, adding some evidence was collected at the various sites and the department is investigating the thefts.

At 8:13 a.m., officers took a report at 12201 Meadowbrook Drive that an attempt to break into a locked vehicle failed.

At 8:38 a.m. a resident at 15561 Punderson Road reported his truck was broken into and his GPS and phone charger were taken. That caller told officers he followed the footprints in the snow to a house on Crampton Drive, according to the report.

At 10:03 a.m., a woman at 15442 Lake Shore Drive reported a stun gun and flashlights were missing from her vehicle.

At 10:27 a.m., a caller at 15334 Punderson Road reported his GPS was stolen from his tow truck and a neighbor noticed a bottle of Welbutrin and a knife were missing from his vehicle.

Hiscox said the victims were asked to call in if they found other items missing.

Most of the vehicles were not locked, allowing the perpetrators to go through multiple vehicles in a short period of time without noise, he said.

“If you leave your doors unlocked, you are making yourself a target,” Hiscox added.
