Jacob G. Rabatin
Jacob “Jake” G. Rabatin, of Montville Township died Jan. 7, 2014 at Geauga Assisted Living in Montville. He was 93.
Born Nov. 5, 1920, in Cleveland, to Jacob and Mary (nee Zahurnnec) Rabatin, Jake had been a lifelong Montville resident.
A staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, Mr. Rabatin was honorably discharged on Oct. 21, 1945.
Jake Rabatin married Mary Jane Bretzius in Columbus on Aug. 9, 1952. She preceded him in death July 1, 2010.
Mr. Rabatin was a chemist with General Electric, retiring in 1981 after being awarded the Steinmetz Award in for his development of radically improved phosphors.
He also is responsible for more than 20 additional patents.
Jake enjoyed roller skating, square dancing, ballroom dancing and golf. He was a huge Ohio State and Cleveland Browns fan.
Along with his wife, Mary Jane, they were founding members of Grace Lutheran Church in Thompson Township.
Survivors include his sons, Jake (Nancy Gale) Rabatin, of Montville, Tom (Lan) Rabatin, of Albuquerque, N.M., and David (Anna) Rabatin, of Florida; daughter, Mary (Mike) Bosler, of Valrico, Fla.; grandchildren, Magen, Brooke, Gary, Jacob, Tina and Miley; great-grandchildren, Jayden and Xavier; brothers, Albert, Vincent and Edward; sister, Francis Lavine; and many extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 13 at Grace Lutheran Church, 8091 Plank Road, Thompson, with burial to follow at Montville Township Cemetery.
Visitation is Jan. 12, from 2-4 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.
