John J. Cherny III
Born in Cleveland on Feb. 16, 1945, John was the second of seven children of John and Josephine (nee Sejba) Cherny Jr.
He had a wide variety of interests. His primary was the 24 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring in 1989 as a chief warrant officer, and the 25 years in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, conducting training to its members and educational classes to the boating public.
John hoped to celebrate 50 years wearing the uniform, his greatest pride. He always mentioned he would do his active duty years again, if he could, as long as he is the same age.
His other interests were model railroading and stamp collecting, and especially researching his family lineage. His philosophy: enjoy life and always have a smile.
Survivors include three brothers and sisters, James (Dolly) Cherny, Joseph (Linda) Cherny and Jeffrey Cherny, all of Mentor, and Jacqueline Willis, of Painesville, Justine Szabo, of Twinsburg, and JoAnne Hudson, of Middlefield.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
