Power of the Pen State Champs
On May 23, Power of the Pen regional district finalists competed at the state level for the Power of the Pen competition. At the state level, seventh-grader Gabriella Mulchin placed third and eighth-grader Hailey Oppenlander placed eighth.
The Power of the Pen, moderated by fifth-grade teacher Kathleen Stefancin and seventh-grade English teacher Kelly Stefanek, is an educational enhancement program devoted to excellence in creative writing and is just one of the many enrichment programs available at NDES.
Fifth Annual Walkathon
On May 23, NDES students from preschool through eighth-grade participated in the fifth annual walkathon and raised over $45,000. The event commenced with announcements made by fourth-grader Elizabeth Morris, the school’s walkathon experience winner and then a vibrant pep rally led by the NDES cheerleaders.
Walkathon stations included the limbo, parachute, relay races, corn-hole, basketball and hula-hoop. Students moved from station to station with their class while enjoying music provided by Rock the House.
Donations were obtained by NDES student letters asking for support from their family and friends. All proceeds will benefit each student, by helping the school remain on the cutting edge of technology and sustain its critical thinking enhancement programs.
Annual Dance Program
NDES students from preschool through third-grade recently performed “God Created the World” at their annual dance program.
As part of the preschool physical education curriculum, each child learns very valuable gross motor skills and social skills through their movement to music class taught by Elaine Nelisse.
Students in kindergarten through third-grade performed their selected numbers taught in dance club. Dance club is one of the many extracurricular clubs offered at school.
Handbell and Recorder Concert
NDES families enjoyed a handbell and recorder concert directed by Sr. Mary Donnalee Resar. Handbells for fourth and fifth-graders and recorders for third-graders are extracurricular programs at NDES that provide children a foundation in music, while giving them an opportunity to play a musical instrument with a group. Performing as a group will hopefully inspire them in their future musical endeavors.
