No one was injured in a bus-car accident at 8:29 a.m. Sept. 14 at the intersection of Chipmunk Lane and Georgia Road in Burton Township, according to the Chardon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
A Cardinal Schools bus transporting 15 students ages 5-9 to A.J. Jordak Elementary School was traveling northbound on Chipmunk Lane and failed to yield the right-of-way to a 2007 Nissan Versa — driven by Alan J. Maresh, 69, of Burton — after stopping at the stop sign and attempting to turn onto Georgia Road, said Sgt. Bridget Matt in a statement.
The bus, driven by Rhonda E. Hostetler, 67, struck the Nissan, which was eastbound on Georgia Road, on the rear passenger side, Matt said, adding Hostetler was cited for failure to yield.
“There were no injuries reported as a result of the crash,” Matt said. “Both the school bus and the Nissan received minor damage as a result of the crash and were able to be driven away from the scene. The crash remains under investigation.”
Cardinal Schools Superintendent Jack Cunningham said Sept. 16 all protocols for a school vehicle accident were followed including a drug and sobriety test. The Jordak principal went to the scene and the school nurse made sure none of the children in the bus were injured and they went on to school, Cunningham said. Their parents were notified about the incident. The minor damage to the vehicles is covered by school insurance, he said, adding the driver has always been competent.
