Shirley McCarthy Daugherty

CHARDON – Shirley McCarthy Daugherty, of Chardon, passed away July 26, 2021, in Saybrook Ohio.

She was born Aug. 29, 1935, in Cleveland, the daughter of Frank and Viola McCarthy.

Shirley met the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Daugherty, on a blind date on her 18th birthday, and married him 18 months later, on Jan. 15, 1955.

A graduate of Collinwood High School, Shirley worked as a keypunch operator for a number of companies, retiring from Picker International in 1997.

When her children were growing up, she volunteered her time with the Park Elementary PTA, as a 4-H Sewing Club advisor, and assisted her husband, who was also a 4-H Club advisor.

After retirement, she travelled extensively with friends and family, and was a voracious reader.

She volunteered for the Geauga County Department on Aging, delivering Meals on Wheels and working in the office at the Chardon Senior Center.

She is survived by her children, Dick Daugherty, of Jefferson, Doug (Wendy) Daugherty, of Chardon, and Sue Lampey (Scott), of Unionville; grandmother to Richard, Shannon and Megan Daugherty, Danielle (Bryan) Briggs and Katie (Sean) Redinger, Glenn Lampey and Bailey Lampey (Chad Cornwell); brother, Ed McCarthy, of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Dick I. Daugherty; parents; and her sister, Wini Burge.

Private family services were held.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made in Shirley’s name to the Geauga County Department on Aging for the Meals on Wheels program, at 470 Center Street, Bldg. 2, Chardon, OH 44024.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of the Western Reserve, the staff at Saybrook Landing and the staff at Maplewood of Chardon for their loving care and compassion.
