Medieval Fair

Seventh-grade students hosted a Medieval Fair for the students of St. Mary School to showcase their learning of the time period. Each student dressed in costume and provided a narrative regarding their place in society. Kings and court jesters roamed the halls and acted out stories of medieval times. Students took part in games and learning lead by the seventh-grade. In the end, the seventh-graders enjoyed a medieval themed luncheon.

Speech Contest Winners

Eighth-grade students recently participated in the Modern Woodsman School Speech Contest. This year’s topic asked students to speak on “An Interesting Landmark.” Students gave three to five minute speeches in their own words and were judged on organization, delivery and presentation and overall effectiveness.

The goal of the contest is to build confidence in public speaking for junior high students.

Earning awards were: Elizabeth Rodriguez, first place; Grace Morano, second place; Rachel Yates, third place; and Andrew Passow, honorable mention.

State Science Fair Bound

Eighth-grader Julia Baitt’s science fair project has moved through the competition at all levels qualifying her for the Ohio State Science Fair in Columbus taking place May 15. In March, Julia’s project was one of the top 25 percent marked as superior at the regional competition on the campus of The University of Akron.

Participants in the fair range in age from junior high through high school seniors and come from districts around the state.

As an eighth grader, Julia admitted to being intimidated by some of her competition saying, “I didn’t even understand some of the high school students’ projects because we haven’t been introduced to the material yet. One of the judges did tell me that my research paper was well written, and I am just proud to have made it this far.”

Julia’s project, “Putting Peppermint to the Test,” is in the category of human behavioral science and tests the effectiveness of providing students with peppermint candies during test taking situations. Her project determined peppermint increased test scores for her participants and could be the secret to her success as well.

Each year, State Science Day brings over 1,000 of the best and brightest student scientists in Ohio to The Ohio State University to compete for close to 100 sponsored scholarships and awards.
