Preparation for The Lion King Musical

St. Mary Chardon Junior High students are working hard to prepare for their annual spring musical event that will take place next month.

This year’s musical will be The Lion King Jr. and take place at The Geauga Lyric Theater on May 4. There will be two shows: 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The junior high students have been working across the subject areas to prepare for the show including translating some of the lyrics used in the musical’s songs and researching African designs for costumes in social studies.

Each student performs a role in helping make the show a success. Some learn to run the lights and sound while others work on lead roles.

This show should be a crowd pleaser for all ages. Come out and enjoy with your family.

Small But Mighty!

St. Mary School Chardon has gone up against some big competition and come out with huge results for the school.

Eight students recently earned a “Superior” rating and a spot to compete at the district Science Fair level, at which five students were chosen to move on to the State Science Fair level this May at The Ohio State University.

This is more double the amount that qualified from the school last year.

These students competed at  Akron University in March against 400 other students from District 5, which includes all of Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Summit, and Portage counties.

Ellie Faber took first place in her category, Biochemistry, with the project, “UV Fright,” and eighth-grader Danny Duffy will advance with his project entitled, “Heating Up,” which looks at what heat is left on your body after making contact with cell phones or tablets.

Faith Tomsick investigated the cleanliness of dine-in restaurant forks in her project, “Restaurant Dining: Dirty Truth.”

Also advancing are Mary McCauley, Faye Hoey and Faith Tomsick.

Junior high science teacher Amber Yeager already has helped St. Mary School earn the distinction of Thomas Edison STEM Award winning school for the second year in a row, and now staff is working toward becoming a STEM designated school by the State of Ohio this year.
