St. Mark’s Plant Sale

May 19-21

Tweets For The Garden plant sale and preview party is May 19 from 7-9:30 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 11900 Chillicothe Road in Chester Township. Tickets for the adult only event are $10 each and include hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Featured are donated items from members, area nurseries and garden centers, as well as handcrafted items from area artisans and gift baskets and raffle items.

Plant sale takes place May 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and May 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Annual bedding plants, perennials, vegetables, hanging baskets, houseplants and other garden items will be available. Selected annuals and hanging baskets may be preordered and prepaid and will be ready for pick up May 19.

Order blanks and reservations for the preview party are available by calling 440-729 1668 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Free Pancake Breakfast

May 20, 8:30-10:30 a.m.

The men of Ledgewood Christian Church are sponsoring and hosting a free breakfast for friends and neighbors — come one, come all.

Menu consists of pancakes, sausage, salmon patties, juice, coffee and tea.

The church is at 8261 Kinsman Road, one-quarter mile west of state Route 306. Ample parking in rear of church.

CVHS Plant and Herb Sale

May 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Chagrin Valley Herb Society is holding its annual plant and herb sale in the community room at Bainbridge Library, 17222 Snyder Road. Select from a fine group of herbs and plants from local nurseries and from member’s home gardens.

Dairy Goat Show

May 20-21, 9 a.m.

The Western Reserve Dairy Goat Association’s 33rd annual weekend of shows will be held at the Geauga County Fairgrounds, Burton. The shows are officially sanctioned by the American Dairy Goat Association for registered dairy goat breeds and are open to the public.

Saturday begins with open youth showmanship classes followed by open senior doe and junior doe shows and two rings of open buck shows. Sunday begins with an open senior doe show followed by an open junior doe show. For more information, call 440-298-3464.

Spring Trash Day

May 20, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Items for Claridon Township Trash Day can be taken to the Claridon Township Maintenance Building, 14000 Mayfield Road. Household refuse along with rimless tires and appliances will be accepted. Only items too large for weekly pickup will be accepted.

Senior citizens who are 60 and over and registered with the Geauga Department of Aging may have their large items picked up at their homes on May 18. Call 440-834-1856, ext. 2130 to sign up. The number of senior residents that can be served is limited.

James Warren Cancer Benefit

F.O.E Auxiliary Fish Fry

F.O.E Ladies Auxiliary is serving a fish fry on Armed Forces Day at the post located at 317 Water St., Chardon.

Metzenbaum Run for Fun

The Geauga County Board of Developmental Disabilities (GCBDD) is hosting the third annual Metzenbaum Run for Fun 5K and one-mile walk at the GCBDD, 8200 Cedar Road in Chester Township. All proceeds raised by the event will benefit individuals in Geauga County with developmental disabilities.

Packet pickup is May 20 from 8 a.m. to noon. Race day registration is from 7-7:30 a.m.

Fishing Derby

May 21, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Munson Township’s annual community Fishing Derby is open to all Munson Township residents. Join for a morning of fishing fun at the Scenic River Retreat, 10900 Mayfield Road. Bring a fishing pole – catch and release only. Bait will be provided. Door prizes awarded.

Rolling Thunder Blessing

May 21, 9:45 a.m.

Hambden Congregational Church will hold a patriotic service and bike blessing with Rolling Thunder at 13840 GAR Hwy. in Hambden Township. All are welcome, two wheels or four wheels, rain or shine.

Motorcycles will depart from Chardon Square at 9:45 a.m. The church service will begin at 10:15 a.m.

A potluck picnic will follow at Hambden Township Park. Please bring a dish to share. The church will provide burgers, hot dogs and drinks. The Chardon VFW will grill and the Young Marines will participate.

Military Commitment Program

Russell Twp. Veterans Memorial Service

May 21, 3 p.m.

Russell Township Veterans Memorial Service will be at Briar Hill Meeting House located at the southwest corner of Fairmount and Chillicothe roads. Parking is available at Fairmount Center for the Arts and along the drive in the cemetery for those with walking limitations.

Guest speaker is Roy Podojil, a Russell resident and veteran of the Vietnam War. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Newbury American Legion, a gun salute, bugler and others will participate

All are welcome to attend and stay for refreshments.

Geauga Consumer Connection

May 24, 4-7 p.m.

Meet Geauga County businesses and community organizations at a free event at the Sisters of Notre Dame Education Center, 13000 Auburn Road in Chardon. Enjoy music and free food tastings from local restaurants. Visit with dozens of local businesses and shop their products and services.

The first 300 people attending the Geauga Consumer Connection will receive a complimentary re-usable bag to collect their special finds as they browse. No advance registration is required.

The annual event is hosted by the Burton, Middlefield and Chardon chambers of commerce and sponsored by local businesses.

Woofstock Volunteer Fair

May 24, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Rescue Village is holding a Woofstock Volunteer Fair for adults 18 and older at the shelter, 15463 Chillicothe Road in Russell Township. Woofstock takes place Sept. 10 at the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field in Moreland Hills.

Volunteers are needed to help with vendors, outreach, distribution, registration and fundraising. Volunteer time commitments range from two to six hours per week depending on the position and will be needed June through mid-September.

Geauga Dems Hot Topic Dinner

May 25

The Geauga County Democratic Party will host its monthly spaghetti dinner served with a hot topic at the Geauga County Democratic Headquarters and Social Hall, 12420 Kinsman Road, Newbury. The after dinner topic of discussion will be the state of the Ohio budget.

Ohio Rep. John Patterson, District 99, will share his insight on the budget provisions offered by the House of Representatives as it moves through the Ohio Senate.

Doors open at 5:45 p.m. for networking, followed by dinner at 6:15 p.m. and the hot topic at 7 p.m.

Food Pantry Open

May 26, 10 a.m. to noon

The Food Pantry at Chester Christian Center Church will be open to the community on Friday, May 26th from 10am to 12pm. The pantry is open to anyone who is in need of food. You do not need to be a member of the church to come to the Pantry.

Chester Christian Center is located at 11815 Chillicothe Road in Chesterland.

East Geauga Kiwanis Fish Fry

May 26, 4:30-7 p.m.

East Geauga Kiwanis Club is holding a fish fry at Cardinal Middle School, 16175 Alameda Drive in Middlefield.

Choose from an all-you-can-eat fish dinner or a shrimp dinner. Dinner includes sides and beverage. Desserts are available for donation.

Family Dinner and Movie Night

May 26, 4 p.m.

First United Methodist Church of Middlefield combines its God Shares a Meal and its family movie night. There is no charge for either the meal that starts at 4 p.m. or movie that starts at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy burgers and sides as well as popcorn and beverages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Civil War Encampment

May 27 & 28, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Geauga County Historical Society will host a Civil War Encampment on the grounds of Century Village Museum in Burton. Over 300 re-enactors will provide a living history of the camp life and military action during the war and respond to questions from visitors concerning the great internal strife.

Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and under. Food and drink will be available on the grounds. Period merchandise will be offered for sale. Select historical buildings at the museum will be open to the public.

Water’s Edge Art Festival

May 27 & 28, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The second annual Water’s Edge Art Festival will be held at Wiegand’s Lake Park, 9346 Kinsman Road in Russell Township. The event will include a variety of original art forms, artists’ booths, music, food and drink. Enjoy free admission and parking, with park activities such as paddle boating, playgrounds and cornhole also available at no charge.

Free Fresh Produce

Newbury United Community Church, 14961 Auburn Road, will be hosting a fresh produce giveaway.

Cleveland FoodBank provides the service to low income Geauga County residents. Please bring ID and bags.

Distributions will continue the first Saturday of the month through November.

100 Gun Bash

June 3, 11 a.m.

Ducks Unlimited’s 100 Gun Bash will take place at the Geauga County Fairgrounds, 14373 Cheshire St. in Burton

Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

The first guns for the main drawing will be drawn at 1 p.m. and the last will be drawn at 5:30 p.m. Two guns will be given away every five minutes.

Ticket eligible for food, soft drinks, beer and a chance on all 100 guns. Winner need not be present. Food served from 1-4 p.m.

Square Dance

June 3, 7-9:30 p.m.

The North Bloomfield Historical Society will host a square dance at the town hall located at routes 45 and 87. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $5 per person. No dancing experience is necessary. For more information, call 330-506-3370.

GCRTA Meeting

June 6, 11 a.m.

Geauga County Retired Teachers Association will meet at the St. Denis Golf Club, 10660 Chardon Road, Chardon. Gathering time will be followed by a business meeting at 11:30 a.m. and a meatloaf luncheon at noon.

There will be a 50/50 raffle and a free lunch raffle. Bill Ward, the Voice of Geauga County, will present “A Visit from a Time Traveler from 1864.”

Cost is $19, which includes a $1 donation to the Grant in Aid program. Reservations and payment required by May 28. Make checks out to GCRTA and mail to: Judy Miller, 17130 Kinsman Road, Middlefield, OH 44062. Call Judy at 440-487-4324 with any dietary restrictions.

Rescue Village Summer Camp

Rescue Village Summer Animal Camps are for children ages 9-12. The fee for each five-day session is $250 per child.

Camps will be offered the weeks of: June 12, 19, 26, July 10, 17, 24, and Aug. 7. Camps run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Registration is limited. Camp applications are available online at www.geaugahumane.org, at the shelter or by emailing Nicole Latosky at educaton@geaugahumane.org.

Flea Market Vendors Wanted

Auburn Community Church, 11076 Washington St., is hosting an outdoor flea market Aug. 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rain date is Aug. 12.

Vendors and individuals wanting to have a garage sale are encouraged to participate. Spaces are 25 feet wide and deep enough for tables as well as two standard-sized vehicles. Vendors must furnish their tables and chairs and to clean out the site at end of sale. Cost is $25 per space.
