St. Mary Receives Top STEM Award

The Ohio Academy of Science has selected 58 Ohio schools to receive the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for accomplishments during the 2016-17 school year and St. Mary has again made the list. It is the third year in a row that the school has been honored.

Accomplishments from last school year made St. Mary eligible for application including sending five students to the State Science Fair at The Ohio State University.

The Governor’s Thomas Edison Awards recognize Ohio schools and teachers who stimulate scientific student research and technological design and extend opportunities beyond the classroom.

“These schools and teachers push the boundaries of the traditional classroom by advising and mentoring students originated research and other hands-on experiences,” said Michael E. Woytek, the Academy’s CEO.

STEM education is teaching that is focused on preparing students in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines for post-high school education as well as innovative careers. It incorporates numerous disciplines and relies on hands-on approaches to help students learn complex ideas.

St. Mary Principal Mary Petelin says, “This year’s award continues to affirm that we are utilizing best practices to ensure that every child has the opportunity to be successful. Each year brings a new challenge for growth and we are committed to continuing to strive for this award for years to come.”
