OMEA Honor Choir and Band

Eight Newbury students in grades 9-12 were selected to take part in the 2017 OMEA District IV and VII Honor Choir and Band at Cleveland State University Nov. 9-11.

Students selected were ninth-grader Greg Bullis, 10th-grader Brittany Pinson, 12th-grader Solomon Smith, 11th-grader Niamh Field, 12th-grader Rebecca Craven, 10th-grader Owen Otto, 11th-grader Nicole Sigan and 11th-grader Rebecca Harrison.

They rehearsed on campus for a combined total of 10 hours with guest clinicians, Dr. Brian Bailey, Dr. Bill Zurkey and Dr. Birch Browning, of Cleveland State University. They then performed a final concert in Waetjen Auditorium on Nov. 11 with other top high school musicians from over 20 different Cleveland-area schools.

Simple Gifts Performs at NES

The folk music duo Simple Gifts came to Newbury Elementary School to present ethnic folk music from North America, Europe and Asia. The award-winning group has performed at such venues as the Smithsonian Institute, Lincoln Theatre and The Brooklyn Museum of Art.

At the assembly, the band played pieces from various countries on instruments such as the dulcimer, violin, psaltery, mandolin, guitar and even spoons. The group performed for kindergarten through third-grade students and closed their performance by choosing students to perform on stage with them.

NHS Inductions

Newbury High School held its annual National Honor Society and Black Knight Order of Distinction ceremony on Nov. 15. The program began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by senior Shannon Lewis, followed by a welcome by Superintendent Michelle Kalish. The high school choir, under the direction of Ms. Alissa Bodner, sang “You will Reap What You Sow” by Pepper Choplin. Then, the official ceremony began.

Candles were lit while the definitions of the four pillars of the National Honor Society were read. The pillars are on what candidacy is based: scholarship, service, leadership and character.

The new members of the Black Knight Order of Distinction who were inducted are 10th-grader Julia Koller, ninth-grader Chloe Aster and eighth-graders Autumn Airey, Madison Fink, Hannah Gilbert and Kelly Morris.

The 2017 National Honor Society inductees and newest members are seniors John Chambers III and Trenton Lair and juniors Hannah Grubbs, Mackenzie Grubbs, Caleigh Hamby, Haley Hamilton, Rebecca Harrison, Arin Justice, Lad Lubanovich, Nathan Mohar, Sarah Perez, Max Plesmid, Mario Puletti, Avery Ryan and Julian Surckla.

Congratulations to all students for their outstanding academics, leadership and service to the community.

Veterans Day Assembly

Newbury Junior-Senior High School was honored once again to host a Veterans Day assembly on Nov. 10. Members of the Newbury and Burton VFW and American Legion participated in honoring veterans who have served. Along with readings by Newbury High School seniors Leisel Fenstermaker and John Chambers III, guest speakers Dave Lair and Mike Blair presented addresses that honored American veterans.

Mr. Larry Ayers and the Burton Legion Drill Team performed the flag ceremony, and the Newbury High School concert band, under the direction of Mr. Matthew Kennedy, performed the “Armed Forces Salute” arranged by Bill Moffit.

First Ever Cupcake Wars

On Nov. 15, Newbury High School’s Fundamentals of Cooking class had their first ever Cupcake Wars. The students were split into teams. Each team had to come up with a cupcake concept, bake and decorate the cupcakes and present the cupcakes to judges. There were hot cocoa cupcakes, mint chocolate cupcakes and peanut butter cupcakes.

Newbury’s own Diane Schneider, owner of D.S. Cakes, was invited to judge the cupcakes. Principal Michael Chaffee, guidance counselor Jessica Lee and school nurse Ruth Cavanagh also judged for the competition. Awards were given for best frosting, best display and most creative overall.
