Chardon VFW Post 6519 is also collecting donations and has a red food box in the canteen located at 752 Water St.
Geauga Dems Discuss Fake News
May 3
The Geauga County Democratic Party will host a taco and salad bar served with a hot topic – “Fake News: What the Public Needs to Know Going into the 2018 Elections” – at the Geauga County Democratic Headquarters and Social Hall located at 12420 Kinsman Road, Newbury. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. for networking followed by dinner at 6:15 p.m. and the hot topic at 7 p.m.
Join in a conversation with Janet Leach,associate professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University and director of Kent’s Media Law Center for Ethics and Access. Learn what to look for, what to watch for and how best to expose fake versus honest media.

GEL Breakfast

Professor David Ward, Herrick Endowed Chair of Plant Biology, Kent State University, will present “The Hidden Invasive Species: Multiple Roles of Native Invasive Plants” at the next Geauga Economic Leadership (G.E.L.) Breakfast at Kent State University’s Geauga Campus, 14111 Claridon Troy Road, Burton.
Learn about the ecological effects of native invasives and their impacts on natural communities. Hear about the research that has been conducted in Africa, as well as at Kent State University.
Breakfast and networking begin at 7:30 a.m. Free and open to the public. Registration is appreciated.

VFW Spaghetti Dinners
Wednesdays, 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Chardon VFW Post 6519 will serve spaghetti and meatballs for dinner every Wednesday in May to complement its weekly Queen of Hearts drawing. Cost is $6 per serving. Extra meatballs are 50 cents.
Genealogical Society Meets

Tom Edwards, from the Cleveland Public Library’s map collection, will present “Mapping it Out” at the next meeting of the Geauga County Genealogical Society at the Chardon Library, 110 E. Park St.
Learn how old maps helped identify landowners, types of structures in an area and more.

Rummage and Bake Sale

Fresh Farmers’ Market Opens

The Geauga Fresh Farmers’ Market opens for its 17th season in the South Russell Village parking lot at Chillicothe and Bell roads. The market will be open every Saturday, rain or shine, until October.
Customers will receive a complementary strawberry plant donated by Hawthorne Springs Greenhouse in Burton – while they last. Everyone is welcome.

Spring Drive-it-Yourself Tour
May 12, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Destination Geauga and 25 local businesses are hosting the 16th annual Spring Drive-it-Yourself Tour. Each stop offers special activities, giveaways, sales, food samples or demonstrations to tour participants.
Choose a minimum of 10 locations to visit and get map stamped, and then join the fun for the grand finale at 3:45 p.m. at Middlefield Market Pavilion. The building will open at 2:45 p.m. with vendors, entertainment, snacks, a silent/Chinese auction, and prize drawings begin at 4 p.m. Three grand prize baskets will be awarded. Winners must be present.

50 Gun Bash
May 12, 11 a.m.
Ducks Unlimited 50 Gun Bash will be held at the Geauga County Fairgrounds, 14373 N. Cheshire St. in Burton
The main raffle will be drawn at 1 p.m. and the last at 5:30 p.m. One gun will be given away every five minutes. Food served from 1-4 p.m.
Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Tickets are available at all Great Lakes Outdoor Supply stores or from any Ducks Unlimited committee member. Gun list is posted on www.NortheastOhioDU.com and winner’s list will be posted after May 15.

Audubon Features Peregrine Falcon
May 15, 7 p.m.
Blackbrook Audubon Society welcomes Chad and Chris Saladin as they offer “A Look into the Lives of Peregrine Falcons” at The West Woods in Russell Township. The Saladins have observed and recorded peregrine activity at several Northeast Ohio nests for some 20 years. Attendees will even meet a live peregrine falcon ambassador from Lake Metroparks Wildlife Center.

Dairy Goat Show
May 19 and 20, 9 a.m.
The Western Reserve Dairy Goat Association’s 34th annual weekend of shows will be held at the Geauga County Fairgrounds, Burton. The shows are officially sanctioned by the American Dairy Goat Association for registered dairy goat breeds and are open to the public.

SNPJ Farm Picnic Schedule
Slovenska Narodna Podporna Jednota (Slovenian National Benefit Society) is hosting a pancake and sausage breakfast May 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at the farm located at 10946 Heath Road in Kirtland. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.
On May 28, the farm will host a holiday dance from 1-7 p.m. featuring the Don Wojtila Band and Fred Ziwich ISM. Gates open at noon. Food will be catered by Joe Tavcar.

Rolling Thunder Blessing

Hambden Congregational Church will hold a patriotic service and bike blessing with Rolling Thunder at 13840 GAR Hwy., Hambden Township. All are welcome, two wheels or four wheels, rain or shine.
Motorcycles will depart from Chardon Square at 9:45 a.m. The church service will begin at 10:15 a.m.
A potluck picnic will follow at Hambden Township Park. Please bring a dish to share. The church will provide burgers, hot dogs and drinks. The Chardon VFW will grill and the Young Marines will participate with Jack Martin on bagpipes.

Tail-Waggin’ Good Time

Geauga County Recorder Sharon C. Gingerich, state Rep. Sarah LaTourette and the Totally Dogs 4-H Club will be hosting the 10th annual Tail-Waggin’ Good Time benefit dinner and silent auction for the Geauga County Dog Shelter and the Geauga County K9 Unit at St. Helen’s Church, 12060 Kinsman Road, Newbury Township.
