Partnership Introduces Natural Prescription for Health

“Partnering with University Hospitals Geauga (Medical Center) makes perfect sense — just one more way we’re trying to make sure Geauga County residents are aware of everything they can do in their parks, no matter what their age or ability.” – John Oros

Studies show exposure to nature contributes to both physical and mental well being, something John Oros, Geauga Park District executive director, has taken to heart — literally.

At age 42, Oros experienced the life-changing event of undergoing heart surgery.

“Parks have always been a place for physical and mental health for me,” Oros said. “This health scare reemphasized the importance of exercise and cardiovascular activity in order to ensure heart health.”

Geauga Park District and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center introduced a new collaboration and wellness initiative to make sure Geauga County residents are aware of ways their parks can help them get and stay fit all year round.

The new collaboration, called Prescription for Parks, recently kicked off with displays in 10 primary care physicians’ offices to help them “prescribe” outdoor activities like walking, jogging, biking, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

Each prescription card says, “Studies show that exposure to nature contributes to your physical and mental wellbeing,” and is paired with a map of all Geauga Park District parks ready to visit.

Established in 1961, today’s Geauga Park District is home to close to 70 miles of trails to explore throughout 22 open parks in the county.

“Partnering with University Hospitals Geauga (Medical Center) makes perfect sense — just one more way we’re trying to make sure Geauga County residents are aware of everything they can do in their parks, no matter what their age or ability,” Oros said. “Your local UH doctor can prescribe one of these parks for physical or mental wellness. During my time off, I often find myself enjoying one of the 80 trails totaling close to 70 miles. I hope our county residents will join me for a walk.”

Prescription for Parks is just one way Geauga Park District and UH Geauga hope to lower obesity rates and inspire more active lifestyles.

The award-winning hospital, located at 13207 Ravenna Road, touches more than 100,000 individual lives each year through direct services and community outreach.

“Most people know that being active is part of a healthy lifestyle, but there are a myriad of reasons why they don’t exercise,” said Dr. Donald DeCarlo, chief medical officer for UH Geauga, who enjoys running. “This collaboration between UH and Geauga Park District connects the proven health benefits of physical activity with the beauty and solace of nature in a unique way that makes exercise fun. We hope a ‘prescription’ for activity in the parks will be the start of lasting, healthy changes in people’s lives.”

DeCarlo said he also hopes this is just a start to more collaborations with UH Geauga and the park district.

“Every study says there is a correlation between regular exercise and positive health,” DeCarlo added. “I don’t think it’s an accident we are one of the healthiest counties in the state.”

Physical activity has always been advised to fight a myriad of ailments,  assisting with reduction of anxiety, depression, anger, confusion and fatigue.

“Experiencing nature is not only a perfect way to rejuvenate yourself, it’s also great for inspiring a more active lifestyle,” said John Kolar, Geauga Park District chief naturalist. “From taking a hike at (new) Claridon Woodlands to borrowing a kayak at Headwaters Park, there are limitless ways that one can become more physically fit while exploring Geauga County’s incredible natural areas.”

Oros said he hopes Prescription for Parks has residents gaining a renewed sense of wellness and health, and when it comes to mental health, he encourages all to simply get outside and relax.

“Take a seat on one of our park benches on one of your favorite trails and soak in all nature has to offer,” Oros said. “The sights and sounds of nature are truly something to behold. Your parks have a special way of recharging one’s soul. We are open 365 days a year and we are affordable to everyone.”
