GCRTA Membership Drive

Geauga County Retired Teachers Association is looking for recently retired school employees. The group welcomes anyone who has worked for a school district anywhere in the United States.

All new members who attend the annual picnic luncheon on Aug. 7 at Munson Township Park, 12641 Bass Lake Road, will automatically receive free membership dues for the remainder of 2018 and all of 2019. Contact Jean at 440-286-4992 to RSVP for the picnic or for information about membership.

Militaria Show

Aug. 3, 3-7 pm.

Aug. 4, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

American Legion Post 167 is sponsoring a militaria show at Post 6519, 752 Water St. in Chardon.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for veterans. The show features weapons only, World War II or earlier.

Free Fresh Produce

Aug. 4, 9-11 a.m.

Newbury United Community Church will be hosting a fresh produce giveaway at 14961 Auburn Road. Cleveland FoodBank provides the service to low income Geauga County residents. Please bring ID and bags. Distributions are the first Saturday of the month through November. There is no distribution in September.

Civic Club Ox Roast

Aug. 4, 12:30-8:30 p.m.

The seventh annual Community Ox Roast sponsored by the Bainbridge Civic Club will be held at Centerville Mills Park, 8558 Crackel Road in Bainbridge. Proceeds benefit Bainbridge Area Food for Friends and the club’s Kenston High School Scholarship Fund.

There will be entertainment, including a bounce house and field games for children, corn hole tournament, beer tent, music, various Kenston organizations, police and fire department information booths and other surprises.

A fun run around the former campgrounds will start at 11 a.m. Register by 10:30 a.m. and receive a meal and T-shirt.

A full adult meal will be served from 12:30-6 p.m. for $20. There will also be a beef sandwich served from 4-8:30 p.m. for $10. Adult tickets with beer are an additional $2. A child’s hot meal is $6.

Geauga Dems Steak Roast

Aug. 4

The Geauga County Democrats will host their annual steak roast at 12420 Kinsman Road, Newbury. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 pm.

Speakers are Ohio Supreme Court Justice candidates Melody Stewart and Michael Donnelley.

Reservations are required. Cost is $45.

Claridon Community Picnic

Aug. 5, 1-3 p.m.

Claridon Community Helps and Aquilla Village is hosting a community picnic. Please bring a dish to share. The main dish, drinks and paper products will be provided.

Protect Geauga Parks

Join Protect Geauga Parks for a Conservation Conversation at West Geauga Public Library, 13455 Chillicothe Road Chester Township. Judy Semroc, of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will present “Land Use and Abuse: Perils of Habitat Fragmentation.”

Greens for the Greenhouse

Aug. 10

Lyndhurst Lumber will host the second annual Friends of WomenSafe golf outing, “Greens for the Greenhouse” at Little Mountain Country Club, 7667 Hermitage Road in Concord. The scramble begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Cost is $100 golfers and includes a light breakfast, driving range privileges, soft drinks and/or beer throughout the day, hole games, 50/50 raffle, prizes, lunch and light dinner.

Chardon VFW Post 6519 Events

Chardon VFW Post 6519 will host a Chinese auction and bake sale Aug. 11 from 12-3 p.m. Tickets are $1 each, six for $5 or 15 for $10. Winner need not be present. Put name and phone number on each ticket. Questions? Call Paula Geiss at 440-635-0192.

The post will serve Philly cheesesteak sandwiches every Wednesday in August from 5-7:30 p.m. during its Queen of Hearts drawing. Cost is $6 for sandwiches and $2 for fries.

The auxiliary is holding a patio furniture raffle. The drawing will be held during the steak dinner on Aug. 25. Tickets are available behind the bar at $5 each or six for $20. Winner need not be present.

Chardon Tomorrow Brewfest

Aug. 11, 12-5 p.m.

The seventh annual Chardon Brewfest will be held on Chardon Square, 111 E. Park St. More than 25 local breweries will be featured, along with live music all day and onsite food vendors. Must be 21 or over to purchase a ticket. Everyone must show ID for entry. All proceeds benefit Chardon Tomorrow.

Chicken Barbecue

Newbury American Legion Post 663 is hosting an annual chicken Texas smoked barbecue and 50/50 raffle in the Hunter Pavilion behind the post at 11008 Kinsman Road, Newbury.

Burton FD Spaghetti Dinner

Come support the Burton Fire Department by attending the all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner at the Burton Fire Department Hall.

Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Kids 4 and under eat free. Event includes a 50/50 raffle and silent auction.

Tickets are now on sale for Geauga Growth Partnership’s sixth annual HomeGrown Geauga fundraising event at ASM International, 9639 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

The evening features food, spirits, music, silent auction, raffles and homegrown entertainment.

Next Step Reverse Raffle

The fourth annual Next Step Reverse Raffle will be held at the Century Village in Burton. Tickets are $60 per person and include dinner, wine and beer. Side boards available and grand prize is $3,000.

Sponsored by Geauga Kiwanis Clubs, proceeds benefit Next Step, a program providing housing and case management services for young adults 18-24 who are homeless and at risk.

CV Herb Society Meets

Flea Market On The Greens

Aug. 18, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Chesterland Historical Village will host its annual Flea Market On The Greens where bargain hunters can find antiques, fine collectibles, doll clothing, tools, glassware, vintage jewelry, Rogish Farms flowers, Lily Society lilies, home decor, repurposed items, furniture and more. The event also includes food and music.

The village is located on the corner of Caves and Mayfield roads in Chester Township.

Chicken Dinner and Car Show

Aug. 19, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Edward and Lucy Parish will host the 10th annual Chicken Dinner and Car Show, rain or shine, at 16150 Center St. in Parkman. Event features classic cars and trucks, Chinese auction, raffles, bingo, DJ Cory and family horse racing.

Tickets for the barbecue chicken dinner are $11 for adults and $6 for children 10 and under.

Donation of $10 requested for car show entries. Goodie bags and dash plaques given to first 100 cars. Three prizes will be awarded along with a $200 gas card, compliments of Best Funeral Home. Drawing at 4 p.m. Winner must be present

Cub Scout Recruitment

Aug. 21, 6:30 p.m.

Cub Scout Pack 193 will hold a recruitment hike at Bessie Benner Metzenbaum Park. The pack is based out of Russell Township, but accepts any and all boys grades 1-5.

Middlefield Chamber Golf Outing

Aug. 24

The Middlefield Chamber of Commerce’s sixth annual golf outing will be held at Rolling Green Golf Club in Huntsburg. Cost is $75 per player or $300 per team. Event includes skins games, proximity games, long drive contests and prizes for first, second and third places.

Registration is from 7:30-9 a.m. Tee off at 9 a.m. Event is a four-person scramble and includes lunch at the turn and dinner following golf.

Yoga at Chardon UMC

Wednesdays, 10-11:15 a.m.

Join for a gentle, progressive style of yoga suitable for all ages and body types, on the floor or on a chair, at the Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North St. No experience is needed.

Conducted by master teacher and instructor Susan Gundersen, a suggested donation of $10 is requested, with proceeds going towards the church’s Guatemala mission. Bring a yoga mat, light blanket and wear comfortable clothing.

Fall Fish Sale Begins

Sept. 20

The Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual fall fish sale will be held on the midway at the Geauga County Fairgrounds. Orders are currently being taken for fingerling-size largemouth bass, redear “shellcracker” sunfish, yellow perch, bluegill/sunfish mix, channel catfish, white amurs and fathead minnows. Pond safety kits and farm pond management books are also available.
