Calls handled July 27 to Aug. 2, 2018

The following is a sampling of the calls handled by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office July 27 to Aug. 2, 2018. In total, the sheriff’s office handled 371 calls during this seven-day period.

ANIMAL PROBLEM

July 27

5:01 p.m., Chardon Windsor Road, Huntsburg. Male is driving a vehicle and dragging his dog on a leash. Deputy advised. Male just parked his car. Male put his dog in the house and he’s getting back into his car. Deputy located dog in question that was in the yard on a chain. Dog acted normal and had no apparent injuries. Deputy will follow up with dog owner and also refer incident to dog warden.

CITIZEN ASSIST

July 28

11:27 a.m., Kinsman Road, Newbury. Male at Geauga Pawn. Has a police report on file with Newton Falls PD. Some of his guns are there at Geauga Pawn and he would like to know how to proceed. Report taken; under investigation.

July 29

1:24 p.m., GAR Highway, Hambden. Man is burning one house west. He does this intentionally. The smoke is coming into my place. Advice given.

July 31

7:58 a.m., Munn Road, Newbury. Caller stated he drove down Munn Road twice this week and noticed a Marine Corps flag flying upside down. Caller says it’s the house with all the trash. Caller believes they hung it upside down unintentionally. Caller said that it is a universal sign for help. Flag was observed, however may be disrespectful to some, it is not illegal and a First Amendment issue.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Aug. 1

9:29 p.m., Water Street, Chardon. Lots of screaming coming from Building C, apartment 223. Called in by neighbor. Dispatch could hear a female screaming in background. Male fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival. Report taken, written statements were received and photos were taken as well.

FOUND PROPERTY

July 31

8:52 p.m., Legend Creek Drive, Munson. Caller advised he located cash on the street. He was walking down the road when he observed a bank envelope laying on the side of the roadway, with money as well. He picked it up and called the GCSO. Deputy advised caller to bring the cash outside in front of his cruiser camera. Deputy counted the money three times with caller present, in front of camera. Deputy will place the U.S. currency in an evidence locker.

FRAUD

Aug. 2

12:12 p.m., Curry Lane, Auburn. Someone has set it up with USPS to forward all my mail for the next month to an address in California. I have all the paperwork. Complainant told deputies he became suspicious when he had not received mail the past few days and then contacted the USPS. Complainant does not believe any of his credit card info or banking info was compromised due to those bills already being sent out. Deputy notified complainant that he needed to contact postal inspector and file a report due to it being their jurisdiction. Deputy also advised complainant to contact his credit card companies to make them aware of situation. Advice given. Call reopened when complainant called back to advise a large amount of money was taken from his checking account and he would like to report it. Complainant stopped at post to pick up a statement form to complete and will contact deputy when finished.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

July 30

11:02 a.m., Bean Road, Munson. Sometime between 6 p.m. last night and 11 a.m. today, nine tires were slashed on three different vehicles.

SUSPICIOUS

July 29

10:39 p.m., Pioneer Rod, Huntsburg. Drugs are left on the side of the road, dope with dope pipes. This came from the car that was just on the traffic stop. Broken glass pipe found in the ditch.

THREATENING

July 28

10:58 p.m., Mayfield Road, Munson. Caller says she went over to her new neighbor’s residence to introduce herself. Per caller, they were friendly to begin with, invited her over for drinks and food. Neighbors then became angry, yelling at caller and threatening to beat her up for trespassing. Female was advised to go back to the neighbors’ house and to wait at her home. Intoxicated misunderstanding; no threats or violence. Deputy spoke to all parties who stated they will work it out once everyone is sober.

TREE DOWN

July 27

5:05 a.m., Cloverdale Drive, Middlefield. Caller said sometime during the night a tree fell and crushed his 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo. He advised he was not sure what to do so he called the GCSO to report incident. Deputy photographed damage and advised caller he would need to also contact his insurance company to file a claim. Middlefield Road Department also advised of the tree down in the street.

VANDALISM

July 27

9:15 a.m., Jackson Drive, Burton. Deputy arrived at home and spoke with complainant who said three days ago his wife went out to check the mail and noticed a purple object laying in the yard beside a tree. Complainant said he went out and looked at the object and found a name on it. He Googled the name and found out it was a sex toy. He said he feels his neighbor is the one who put it in his yard. Deputy asked why he waited three days to report it and complainant said he was just going to throw it away, but because of an ongoing dispute with the neighbor he felt he should have the incident documented. Advice given.
