Kindergarten Enrichment Class
Kindergarten classes witnessed the hatching of their beloved monarch butterflies. Under the guidance of their enrichment teacher Sr. Barbara Soplata, SND, the students were able to watch the butterfly life cycle unfold right before their very eyes.
The children were surprised to see the size of the egg was no bigger than a top of a straight pin and just how fast the black, yellow and white striped caterpillars grew by eating the milkweed that grows on their school campus. They observed the chrysalis gets darker as it became closer to opening and learned that the male butterflies have black spots on their hind wings while the females do not. It was a magical experience to watch their butterflies fly off to the flowers in the school courtyard and eventually south to Mexico.
NDES Welcomes New PE Teacher
The school’s new physical education teacher Eric Lakia reflected, “My first few weeks have been nothing short of tremendous. I truly feel blessed to be in such an amazing role as PE teacher at NDES. From day one, the faculty, staff, administration, parents, and students have made me feel right at home. I look forward to an amazing year working with everyone. We truly are ‘better together.’”
Religion is Not Just a Class
Sr. Barbara Knuff, SND, commented, “Junior high students experience regular opportunities to connect with Our Lord through journaling in their religion classes. ‘Topic starters’ have included sights and sounds that they are grateful for and that they take for granted. After reflecting, students take several minutes to write a thank you note to God in their journals. Another important aim in religion is for students to recognize how the Good Lord wants to use them as His instruments in this world. Just before the long weekend, the journaling involved a personal reflection on how they will make a commitment to make the weekend better for someone, some situation and some event coming up over the Labor Day holiday. Our hope is that our good-hearted students will realize how important it is to get to know the Lord better and to recognize how powerful their words, their smiles and their simple acts of service can be for His purposes.”
