Catholic Schools Week
Catholic Schools all around the country come together for one week a year to celebrate Catholic education in fun and imaginative ways. Since the week is scheduled for the last week of January, it often means students are gifted with a snow day as well and this year did not disappoint. Despite the cold temperatures, students were able to squeeze fun and learning into a few days.
This year’s theme was, “St. Mary Chardon Rocks.” The kindergarten through fourth-graders were treated to a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame through the museum’s Rockin’ the Schools program where they learned about the building blocks of music and toured the exhibits together.
Sundays of Catholic Schools Week are always reserved for the school’s free pancake breakfast and open house for the community. Each year, student ambassadors look forward to showing off their school to the community and prospective families, as well as enjoying authentic Chardon maple syrup donated by the Brock family.
On Monday, students dressed in their pajamas and started their day with a “Rock the Lock” challenge. Once solved, they were treated to donut surprises. Later in the day, each class moved up one grade to see what next year holds for them.
Tuesday brought in 15 speakers for the schools annual Career Day. Students rotated through various career speakers taking notes on the advice they offered. This year’s group consisted of bankers, medical professionals, construction and even a former NFL player. Each year, students look forward to seeing who their guests will be for the day.
The weather cut the week’s celebrations short, but all coming activities will be rescheduled, including a STEMnival hosted by the junior high and a masked singer competition.
