Science Fair Competitors Shine
Six St. Mary junior high students advanced to the regional state science fair competition at Walsh Jesuit High School. St. Mary Chardon historically represents well and has sent competitors to states many years in a row.
Three of the current competitors – seventh-graders Zoe Virant and Elizabeth Passow and eighth-grader Michael Hoffmann – earned a superior ranking and were invited to the district level which will be held at Akron University on March 16.
In addition to these awards, three students scored in the top three of their respective categories and walked away with cash prizes. Seventh-grader Luke Hoge came in third in the Earth and Space Sciences/Environmental Science category with his pH Level Water Test. Zoe Virant placed second in Zoology/Medicine /Microbiology with her project, “Effect of Bone Chewing on Bacteria Growth.” Michael Hoffmann took first place in the botany category with this bean growing experiment entitled “Bright Ideas.” Michael also won the Governor’s Award, which focused on Excellence in Agricultural and Food Science Research.
