The Cardinal Huskies have chosen a former standout QB from North High School to lead their football program.
George Gresko, who has been an assistant coach at Kenston the past four seasons, was expected to get school board approval at the March 13 meeting.
Gresko replaces Eric Cardinal, who stepped down Feb. 15 after 19 seasons.
“It’s very exciting,” Gresko said Monday morning as he prepared to watch the team in the weight room for the first time. “There are a lot of great things going on here, and I know there are a lot of tough kids here — some big, strong kids.”
Gresko said he learned a lot from the Bombers’ 2018 state championship run, the first in school history.
“I’ll tell you what, it was one heck of a ride,” Gresko said. “I want to thank Jeff (Grubich). I want to thank all of those coaches. The hours that they put in are amazing.”
Grubich said he knew Gresko wanted to become a head high school football coach one day.
“It’s exciting for him, and he’s put all the time in. I wish him a lot of luck,” Grubich said.
As Gresko gets to know the kids, he said he’ll know more about how the Huskies, a Wing-T team for two decades, may change things.
The Bombers ran a hurry-up spread offense. But Gresko said he’s been impressed by the size of the players he has already met.
“Maybe we run the ball 90 percent of the time,” he said. “We have some big kids out there.”
Gresko was a four-year starter with the North Rangers, where he won conference MVP two straight seasons.
He played at John Carroll after graduating in 2012.
