Learning Fair a Success

Thank you to everyone who attended the Learning Fair Open House and Young Authors Celebration on March 20. In addition to viewing highlights from all programs in the new multipurpose room, families had the opportunity to visit classrooms, meet teachers and hear the band and choir perform.

Brain Day at Lakeland

Last week, Lakeland Community College celebrated Brain Awareness Week, culminating in Brain Day for area seventh-grade students. Cerek Szczyglowski and Andrea Ivanko were selected to represent NDES. The day-long experience offered the students the opportunity to interact with Lakeland’s professors, participate in engaging hands-on activities, dissect a sheep’s brain, learn about the nervous system and special senses and work in Lakeland’s state of the art science laboratories.

Classroom Highlights

Third-grade students welcomed Lt. Mele, father of third-grader John Mele, as part of their studies of service dogs. Mele shared details about his work for the Mayfield Heights Police Department, including the eight years he spent working as a K9 handler with his partner, Duke. Students learned about the in-depth training K9’s must go through, heard stories of their time together as partners and had many questions answered. They were amazed at how important these dogs are in law enforcement, all while being their loyal, loving companions.
