LWV Hosts Free Speech Forum

The League of Women Voters of Geauga County will host its annual free speech forum at Munson Town Hall, 12210 Auburn Road. All Geauga residents are welcome to attend.
Speakers will be state Sens. John Eklund and Sean O’Brien and state Rep. John Patterson. They will each speak for 10 minutes about the state of the state, followed by questions from the audience.

Garden Club Hosts Plant Sale
May 25, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Gates Mills Garden Club hosts its annual plant sale at the club’s Esquire’s Cottage & Barn, 1280 Chagrin River Road, Gates Mills. Admission is free. The event will also feature a vintage boutique with gently-used items for sale.
The sale features wide variety of annuals, perennials, shrubs and houseplants from club gardeners.

Bluegrass at Hambden Grange
May 25, 6 p.m.
Hambden Grange will host Mark Posey’s Doghouse Entertainment Bluegrass Jamboree featuring South 79 and Lost and Lonesome. Doors open at 6 p.m.; show starts at 7 p.m.
Food stand is available. Tickets are $10 for adults. Children under 11 are free.
The Grange is located at 9778 Old State Road, Chardon.
Audubon Monthly IBA Walk
May 26, 8 a.m.
With input from its members, Blackbrook Audubon’s monthly Important Bird Area (IBA) survey will migrate from Chagrin River Park to Beaty Landing Sunday, May 26. Birders can take advantage of Lake Metroparks’ expansion of Beaty Landing with a new parking lot and trail on 35 more acres to find more birds.
Park at the new east entrance located at 543 E. Walnut St., Painesville. Blackbrook will monitor the site on the fourth Sunday of each month. The list of birds found will be posted on eBird.org. Birders of all skill levels are welcome.

New Independent Film Showing

A viewing of the documentary “While I Breathe, I Hope” directed by Emily Harrold will be held at Community Church of Chesterland, 11984 Caves Road.
A peaceful civil rights demonstration on South Carolina’s State College campus turns tragic when three black students are killed and 28 others are wounded by State Highway Patrol officers. One survivor, activist Cleveland Sellers, was the only person convicted and jailed in the aftermath known as the Orangeburg Massacre. Fifty years later, his son Bakari Sellers continues the fight for equality as he campaigns for change. The film was recently shown at the Cleveland Film Festival.
Auburn Large Item Drop-Off Day
June 1, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Large items for Auburn Township Trash Disposal Day may be taken to the Adam Hall Community Center, 11455 Washington St. No hazardous waste, building products, household garbage or yard waste will be accepted.
Nominal fee of $7 per car and small truck loads and $10 per large truck load will be charged. Maximum of eight truck tires, on and off rims, per household will be accepted for free.
Senior residents who are registered with Geauga County Department on Aging qualify for free item pickup service. Call 440-279-2130 to register.

GCRTA Meeting
June 4, 11:15 a.m.
The Geauga County Retired Teachers Association will meet at the E.O.U.V. Club, 8636 Pekin Road in Russell Township. Gathering time will be followed by the business meeting at 11:30 a.m. and a schnitzel and scalloped potatoes lunch at noon.
Fairmount Center for the Arts will present a program which includes musical performances as well as dance, featuring adult advanced tap students.

Tail Waggin’ Good Time

Totally Dogs 4-H Club, Geauga County Recorder Sharon C. Gingerich and state Rep. Sarah LaTourette will be hosting the annual Tail-Waggin’ Good Time benefit dinner and silent auction for the Geauga County Dog Shelter and the Geauga County K9 Unit at St. Helen’s Church, 12060 Kinsman Road, Newbury Township.
