Sheriff’s Report
May 24-30, 2019
The following is a sampling of the calls handled by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office May 24-30, 2019. In total, the sheriff’s office handled 487 calls during this seven-day period.
AGENCY ASSIST
May 27
9:11 p.m., Blackbrook Road, Painesville. Bomb squad. Male overdosed in parking lot. Lake County deputies arrived and arrested the male and his female passenger. While searching the vehicle, deputies located drugs and multiple fireworks. Deputies also located a suspicious package in trunk containing what appeared to be an IED. Deputies cleared area and contacted bomb squad. K-9 Argo was deployed and alerted to the vehicle where the fireworks were located. He then alerted to the suspicious package and three other items that were removed from vehicle. Device was x-rayed and showed to contain what appeared to be an explosive device. Bomb tech then secured package in the total containment vehicle for transport. Bomb tech and Lake County detectives will interview the suspect tomorrow about incident.
AIRCRAFT
May 29
3:43 a.m., Valley Road, Auburn. Caller advises her husband drives a small plane and she has a phone app that says his location stopped being updated over top of LaDue. She says he was supposed to be home a couple hours ago and hasn’t returned. She checked Middlefield airport where he was supposed to land and he is not there and his car is still there. Made contact with Cleveland IFR Approach; they are checking with Wayne County Airport and are trying to find out last contact with him. OSHP ETA 15 minutes. ODNR Division of Watercraft advised. Caller’s app says he was over LaDue at 11:55 p.m. He did not file a flight plan. He was picked up on radar by Columbus Approach around 10:45 p.m. Deputy en route to LaDue with drone equipment. 7:34 a.m. update, believe the plane is not in the water, believe it is in the wooded area to the east. 8:58 a.m. found debris, found plane and pilot.
ANIMAL ABUSE
May 27
3:03 p.m., Chardon Windsor Road, Hambden. Guy to the east is beating his yellow lab puppy. Report taken. Humane officer contacted.
ANIMAL PROBLEM
May 30
12:23 a.m., Shedd Road, Middlefield. 6-8 horses on 168 side of Shedd about 1,000 feet from Newcomb. They were in middle of road, but now they’re in field. Horses still not penned into a pasture. Deputy advised. All returned to Shedd Road address.
CITIZEN ASSIST
May 24
9:40 p.m., Kevin Lane, Hambden. Caller states he loaned his neighbor his jack and he will not return it. Caller would like deputy to meet with him at his residence first. Neighbor returned the jack.
CITIZEN DISPUTE
May 24
2:28 p.m., Treadway Drive, Munson. Neighbor is blowing rock and debris into yard. Protection order. On camera. No further checkups. Report taken and will be referred to police prosecutor.
May 29
12:07 p.m., GAR Highway, Montville. Speak with manager regarding a tenant’s relative making threats to sabotage the area to flood the campground. Subject not on location. Deputy advised. Campground upset over camper saying staff was rude this weekend to the campers. Document only.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
May 27
7:18 p.m., Dawson Drive, Auburn. Son just hit his mother with a broom. She believes he is on drugs and out of control. Unknown alcohol; usually on meth. He is often threatening to kill people, but shouldn’t have any weapons on him. He has been hallucinating and his paranoid. He has been calling his mother names, screaming profanities and constantly threatening he is going to kill people. Mother wants male tested for drugs. She is sure he is high on meth and will most definitely be driving erratically. To prosecutor for review.
EXTRA PATROL
May 29
8:06 p.m., Main Market Road, Troy. Caller states he saw someone flying a drone in the area around 7:45 p.m. and that at 8 p.m. he saw a separate party walking out of the woods. No description. Caller would like extra patrol overnight due to people being nosey about the plane crash. Extra patrol will be conducted throughout the night.
FRAUD
May 24
9:25 a.m., Butternut Road, Burton. Female in lobby wanting to file fraud report. Deputy advised. Female received Facebook message that she would get $950,000 for a payment of $350. She gave her address and phone number to messenger.
11:25 a.m., Princeton Road, Huntsburg. Female is out $9,000 already and they keep calling for more money. Son is on scene. Deputy advised. Complainant sent $9,000 cash in a phone book to Brooklyn, N.Y., for a Publishing Clearinghouse scam several days ago. Complainant further stated she knows the money is gone, but they keep calling for more money. Complainant had already requested her number be changed from phone company and changed all her bank info. Complainant wanted incident on file at GCSO. Advice given. Complainant also will file complaint with the Ohio Attorney General’s office.
May 28
3:35 p.m., Chardon Road, Chardon. Male received fraudulent letter in the mail that he was entitled to inherit $10 million possibly from a law firm overseas. Scam letter.
HARASSMENT
May 24
8:49 p.m., Brakeman Road, Hambden. Caller would like to make a report about someone hacking into her Facebook account and posting threatening things. She changed her passwords and still has issues. She advised she probably was going to delete her account, but wanted incident documented.
INFO REPORT
May 24
5:40 a.m., Klatka Drive, Munson. Private investigator will be on Klatka Drive today conducting surveillance. Deputy advised.
OVERDOSE
May 29
6:37 a.m., Mayfield Road, Claridon. 30-year-old male overdose on something, she thinks it is heroin. Caller gave him Narcan. Caller says she had a mouth-to-mouth mask on him. Patient opened his eyes and is talking. Gentleman got on the phone and says he fell asleep. Male stated he snorted drug; female at residence administered Narcan.
POSSIBLE DUI
May 25
8:05 a.m., U.S. 422, Bainbridge. White BMW M4 was pulled into BP. Male driver looked like he was passed out from overdosing. His mouth was wide open. They woke him up and he left driving southbound on 306 from Washington. Just pulled into the other BP. See narrative.
SUSPICIOUS
May 24
4:49 p.m., Rock Creek Road, Thompson. Younger male with a red shirt was standing in the ditch with a handgun in his hand. Unknown what he was doing. Caller is concerned. Deputy responded. 13-year-old attempting to catch frogs with a net.
May 25
6:40 p.m., Lucky Bell Lane, Auburn. Caller states someone is launching golf balls at his house. He thinks they are coming from Lucky Bell somewhere. Deputy met with caller who said his house has been getting hit with golf balls over the years and one bounced off his roof today. No damage to house. He thinks it is his neighbors down the road because of the direction the ball comes. Deputy spoke with Cumberland Trail resident who advised she and her two sons just got home. Deputy found no reason not to believe her. Deputy advised if they are hitting golf balls and damage property or injure someone it would be a criminal matter. They advised they understood.

8:45 p.m., Aquilla Road, Claridon. Male is walking toward Chardon with a mask over his face pushing a shopping cart, carrying a guitar. Deputy advised. Checks OK.
THEFT
May 26
12:50 p.m., Main Market Road, Parkman. Employee stole beer Friday night. Worker spoke to owner and they want a report today the safe was open and money is missing. Report taken.
May 29
7:26 p.m., Heron Drive, Hambden. Wallet stolen from restaurant or middle school on Auburn Road in Painesville. Her KeyBank debit card was used to purchase a phone on eBay for $1,200. Report taken.
