Using Wind To Create Energy
Third-graders continue their studies on natural resources. After learning some resources are non-renewable, focus turned to how renewable energy can be used.
Students were tasked to use wind, a renewable energy source, to power a small car. Working in groups, they designed either a sail or pinwheel to propel their car. Considering the three R’s, they reused materials such as newspaper, tissue paper, bubble wrap or paper to make their sail or pinwheel.
After their design was completed, they placed their car in front of a fan. Ms. Barb Tropf turned the fan on a low setting and then the students measured the distance their car traveled. Ms. Tropf says there were two cars that made it past the five-yard sticks that were laid down on the floor to measure distance – both cars had a pinwheel design for their sail.
