Students Awarded by Geauga West Rotary

Three students at West Geauga High School competed in the Geauga West Rotary Club 4-Way Test Speech Contest on March 17. Finalists Julia Martinez, Emily Berdis and Natalie Pistone-Nascone delivered their speeches via Zoom to the club.

The speeches were between 5 to 7 minutes in length and included components of the Rotary 4-Way Test: “Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

Each speech was judged by members of the Rotary Club and Julia Martinez was selected as the winner. She will go on to compete in the district competition.

Each student received a cash prize for her efforts. Interact Advisor Chelsea Talty and Principal Jay Bishop were instrumental in coordinating the event with the assistance of English teacher Keli Sessler.

Preventing Bullying

School counselor Natasha Williams has been teaching about anti-bullying in several classrooms at Lindsey Elementary School.

According to Mrs. Williams, “It is important to teach our students about anti-bullying because it helps them understand what bullying behaviors are and what to do in a bullying situation. When the students recognize bullying with its different types and know the steps to solve it, they are more equipped to advocate for themselves and each other.”

Last week she worked with Mrs. Evanthia Hocevar’s class, where the students learned the importance of the topic and the necessary skills to prevent bullying. The students wrote essays, created posters and gave presentations to demonstrate their understanding of the information presented. Mrs. Williams will be working with all in-person and virtual classrooms at Lindsey Elementary School this spring.
