BVA Students Design Blueprints

First- and second-grade students enrolled in the Badger Virtual Academy have recently been busy designing exclusive blueprints and using them to create their very own functioning umbrellas. After reading the story “The Umbrella Trick,” students were assigned the task to create their own umbrella to prevent them from getting wet and sick like The Hoppers from the story.

Students were given a list of requirements to follow when completing the project and a set of expectations was set. They were to use common, everyday items found around their house in the process. Students then had to video-record themselves testing out their umbrellas before finally tweaking and adding some finishing touches to make them unique.

Overall, the exercise was a worthwhile project and the students put in a great deal of effort. Special mention goes out to Dave Malkus, Michelle Sivillo and Shaun Forbes for creating such a thoughtful project with real-world skill sets for the BVA students. Visit berkshireschools.org to watch the videos of the students’ umbrellas.
