Patriots to be honored at Troy Cemetery are Sgt. Benedict Alford, Pvt. Ebenezer Hopkins, Pvt. Ira Phelps, Pvt. Jeptha Poole and Pvt. Borden Potter, and at Mumford Cemetery, Pvt. Jonas Carter.
If you believe you might be a descendent of one of the patriots and/or would like additional information on the grave marking ceremony, contact NEOSAR’s Steve Hinson at 440-645-7322 or stevhin@earthlink.net.
“We would be pleased if you could attend the ceremony representing your family’s patriot ancestor,” Hinson said in a statement. “The ceremonies will include brief addresses, (the) reading of patriot biographies, dedication of markers, a color guard and musket firing detail in revolutionary period uniforms and ladies in period clothing, (and) placement of wreaths and flowers, (as well as) taps.”
A new military memorial stone will be dedicated for Sgt. Benedict Alford
Northeast Ohio is rich in Revolutionary War patriots who served from the alarm at Lexington and Concord to winters in Valley Forge and the surrender at York Town, Hinson said.
The Sons of the American Revolution is a male “lineage” society whose members have documented lineage to Revolutionary War patriots that have been approved by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
If you are interested in becoming a member, contact NEOSAR’s Troy Bailey at 440-645-0465 or tbailey@gwcmail.net, or visit www.neo12sar.net. A local chapter genealogist can help you document your lineage to a Revolutionary War ancestor at no charge.
