Sept. 9-15, 2022

The following is a sampling of the calls handled by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office Sept. 9-15, 2022.

ANIMAL ABUSE

Sept. 15

7:51 p.m., Thomas Drive, Middlefield. Caller and another neighbor witnessed animal abuse. She witnessed owner throw his brown dog over the fence by his collar and them proceed to punch the black and white dog several times in the face. Male was very irate. Black and white dog is pregnant. They are Boston terriers. Deputy responded and looked at two dogs. Both appeared to be OK. No obvious injuries. Deputy informed dog owner and complainant the humane society will be handling investigation.

CITIZEN ASSIST

Sept. 9

7:49 p.m., Newcomb Road, Middlefield. Received a call from female stating they are coming to take her horses with the sheriff. They told complainant there is a problem with the contract she signed. Caller rescued the horses four years ago and paid in full for them. Caller wants to know her rights. She said she is supposed to send them photos of the two ponies so often and the vet records, which she does but not when they ask. Caller told it is a civil issue and GCSO would not remove the horses without a court order. Caller advised to contact a lawyer and call 911 if anyone shows up at her house.

Sept. 12

2:17 p.m., Newcomb Road, Middlefield. Caller requesting an escort to residence to repossess two horses. Caller was advised to get a court order for the horses and do not come back to property until she has a court order.

CITIZEN DISPUTE

Sept. 12

1:52 p.m., Burrows Road, Montville. Caller is having problems with neighbor mowing grass into the fence. Son of neighbor was shooting his rifle in the air. Dispute over grass clippings. Son questioned about the firearm and stated when his father and complainant were  arguing he shot a ground hog at same time. Complainant did not want to pursue charges. Advice given to both parties.

FRAUD

Sept. 12

5:02 p.m., Main Market Road, Parkman. Caller was scammed out of money by an advertisement on Facebook for a home rental. He asked for a $50 deposit and gave them an address to meet at. Upon arrival to the address the female that lives there stated she owns the home and there have been multiple people there for the same thing. Advice given.

Sept. 13

9:40 a.m., Mentor Road, Chardon. Caller advised someone bought a John Deere tiller from him. They sent him a check for $3,985 when the cost of the tiller was much less. Caller cashed the original check and the person then changed their mind. Caller gave them back the funds. The original check bounced and caller told the account was closed and the checks were most likely stolen out of New Jersey. Advice given to contact Chase Bank.

HARASSMENT

Sept. 9

6:42 p.m., Leggett Road, Montville. Deputy spoke with complainant who stated he received two phone calls from out-of-state numbers. Both numbers left an automated voicemail saying he sent a suspicious package and was being investigated. He was concerned because he sent a package returning an item purchased online. Deputy listened to the voicemails and advised complainant they were scam phone calls. He did not speak to anyone. He was advised not to answer any other phone calls that come in. Nothing criminal occurred.

Sept. 15

11:14 p.m., Merritt Road, Munson. Complainant would like to meet with a deputy to file a report for harassment. Ex and another person have been driving by complainant’s home honking horns and just generally harassing him. Deputy spoke with complainant who said his ex-girlfriend and friend are now dating. Complainant said they are saying they want to call him while they are having sex to make him listen to the noises. Complainant advised to block their number and/or get a new phone with a new number.

SUSPICIOUS

Sept. 10

4:35 a.m., Mayfield Road, Claridon. Adult male at Jacques reported he was assaulted and threatened with a knife by two males. Incident under investigation.

6:25 p.m., Concord Hambden Road, Concord. Caller advised white male in sleeveless grey shirt walking in back part of their property toward 608. Park ranger saw his in the creek. No longer has eyes on him. Lake Metroparks ranger observed same suspect from earlier pursuit in a river at bottom of the Concord Hambden hills. Nearby resident called in same male. Sergeant deployed his K-9 and started a track from suspect’s footprints. Track led west for approximately 200 yards at which point K-9 discontinued track. Reverse 911 call notifying residents to call GCSO if male observed. Sergeant photographed boot print.

Sept. 12

1:01 p.m., Old State Road, Hambden. Called in from the auditor’s office which received a phone call stating neighbors are concerned the animals are not being fed because the restaurant owner is reported to be in jail. Deputy spoke with owner, who is not in jail and he’s feeding his livestock and working on re-opening restaurant and trying to control his pigs.

THEFT

Sept. 14

4:34 p.m., Kinsman Road, Newbury. Female has been doing work for Dollar General on special contracts and today the manager caught her taking items on camera. Deputy advised. Manager said outside contractor working at store took merchandise the previous night without paying.

Sept. 15

5 p.m., Pinehurst Drive, Munson. Check was stolen out of the mailbox. It already has been cashed at a Lakewood Huntington branch. Check was for $22 and the person altered it and made it say $2,200.89. Teller cashed the check. Teller did obtain an ID from person.

THREATENING

Sept. 9

10:54 a.m., Main Market Road, Parkman. Needs to report threats from his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend. Advice given. No direct threats made.

12:23 p.m., Merritt Road, Munson. Male in lobby of GCSO to report he is receiving death threats. Incident already reported. Advice given.

TRESPASSING

Sept.14

7:07 p.m., Burton Windsor Road, Burton. Hang gliders swooping down kicking at crops and grain silo. Complainant is going to follow them to the fairgrounds where they land to confront them. Two gliders in back baseball field. Contact was made with gliders who were advised not to disrupt any property unless there is a mid-air emergency.
