By cutting the Kinetic by Windstream ribbon Sept. 30 at Oberland Park, Susan Schraibman set the stage for fast speed internet availability in two townships.

The grand opening of the fiber-optic-powered network to customers in Newbury and Russell townships is just the beginning in Geauga County, said Schraibman, president of state operations in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

“We service mostly rural areas,” she told the small crowd on the sunny, cool, blustery morning at the pavilion in the Newbury Township park.

Kinetic has a presence in Ashtabula County, including Rock Creek Village, and is moving south operating out of an office in Chardon, said Schraibman, who works out of Twinsburg.

Kinetic’s plan for the area is part of a $2 million expansion that will make about 112,000 households eligible to access high-speed internet, she said.

With the fiber optic installation along roads in two townships in Geauga County, Schraibman estimates 3,400 homes can become customers.

“Our customers really want to be connected,” she said, adding the line from the main cable will provide reliable internet for individuals who want to work, stream, game and learn from home.

“We’re giving them the best service, speed and connectivity,” she said.

The need for good connectivity became apparent during the pandemic, when demand for tele-medicine exploded.

“That was the only good thing to come from it. The pandemic accelerated fiber-optic by 10 years,” Schraibman said, adding the fiber-optic connection will provide easy, convenient and quick access to healthcare.

She also said Kinetic is going to be hiring area workers to install the fiber optic cable in Newbury and Russell areas.

Len Stanek, local manager of operations, said Kinetic needs about 12 technicians and half a dozen construction people.

Those already employed are mostly from Geauga County, he said.

The fiber optic cable running from the road can be a little fragile, but has a durable casing, he said, adding it can be buried or strung to the house the same as other utilities.

The retail office at 205 South Hambden Road in Chardon is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, he said.

Lauri Zaller, Kinetic assistant sales manager for Ohio and New York, said cost of the internet service is $60 per month, but surcharges and taxes are not included in that price.

Kinetic also offers home security systems that can be self-installed, she said.

Ohio Sen. Jerry Cirino spoke briefly at the grand opening.

“I’m delighted for Newbury. This will benefit individuals, residents, businesses and educational institutions here,” he said.
