It was only a few months ago, as juniors, that Carter Flynn and Parker Munday led the Bombers baseball team to a Final Four state championship appearance at Canal Park.

Fast forward a few months, and add a uniform change, and these two multi-talented student-athletes are leading the Bombers on the pitch.

Goals by senior captains Flynn and Munday led the Bombers to a sectional title victory Oct. 22 over the Streetsboro Rockets, 2-0.

“I think we played good — I mean, there is a lot we can clean up,” Munday said. “We’ll clean up (those things) in practice on Monday and then get back (to it) on Tuesday in the game. I think we’ll get at it.”

Added Flynn, “I thought it was a well played game. We had a lot of chances, though; we need to finish a majority of them, not just two. Looking forward to making a good run here. It’s a good group of guys.”

Additionally, the dominant Bombers defense was led by seniors Ben Gurd, Trent Krueger, Nicholas Lai, captain Nate Schaedler and goalie Jonas Grunden.

“I think they let one shot off on goal,” Kenston Head Coach Trip Roney said. “It was great, love to see that.

“Fortunately we have a lot of upperclassmen on the back line, so there is a lot of maturity there. They typically play a conservative way of defending, which is great, very intentional in their movement on and off the ball. So I was proud of them (and) the defensive outing today.”

Senior defender Trent Krueger added, “It’s great to keep a clean sheet, especially in the playoffs. We just want to keep doing that as we go. (We) keep winning games if we don’t allow a goal.”

For the season, the Bombers now have amassed 11 shutouts with their senior led defensive back line and Grunden in net.

Grunden explained the Bombers mentality.

“We don’t care who we play, we’re going to bring the same energy. And you know we control what we do, and that’s what we’re going to focus on in practice on Monday. And heading into the (next) game, we (will) have the same mentality as we did today.”

With the defense dominating the game, Flynn got the game-winning goal for the Bombers at the 27:57 mark. He sprinted and maneuvered through heavily contested traffic to put the ball into the back corner of the net.

“Just a good ball through,” Flynn said. “I beat a couple guys, and just put it in the corner. It was fun.”

The Bombers added a goal late in the second half to complete the scoring on Munday’s team-leading 19th goal of the season.

“I got it at the top of the box, and me and that kid were getting physical all game,” said Munday. “I got lucky when he fell, and I just slotted it in the bottom right corner.”

In addition to Munday’s 19 goals and four assists this season, the Bombers have been led offensively by Carter Flynn (13 goals, 4 assists) sophomore Grady Flynn (3 goals, 1 assist) and Trent Krueger (5 assists, 1 goal).

Now 11-4-2 on the season, Kenston advances to the district semifinals Oct. 25 to face Ursuline.
