Language and Culture Field Trip
The language and culture class concluded the second quarter with a field trip that beautifully highlighted the heritage and flavors of Mexican cuisine. The field trip was made possible thanks to the kindness and generosity of the Martinez family in providing an educational, hands-on experience for the students at their family restaurant, Los Venados in Orwell.
Mr. Martinez’s presentation — made both in English and Spanish — was delivered with such kindness and humor that the students felt welcome from the moment they entered his restaurant. He shared his deep love for cooking from his childhood, rooted in his grandmother’s love for Mexican food.
The best part was that each of the students participated in making and sharing the Mexican dishes. The field trip gave the students insights into a key aspect of the Hispanic experience: cooking culturally significant dishes, appreciating the meaning behind those dishes and sharing that meal together at the table.
4th-Grade Science Investigation
Students in Mrs. DiSanto’s fourth-grade class modeled the flow of a river in an investigation. The students analyzed how the flow of a river traveled using clay and water in their model. The students determined how the water flow’s energy affected the path traveled. They enjoyed the process and are becoming inquisitive scientists.
Washi Tape or Duct Tape?
Second-graders were given the challenge of building a nativity scene using only popsicle sticks, washi tape and peg dolls. In the first trial they learned the washi tape wasn’t effective in holding the popsicle sticks together. When asked what they thought would help improve their buildings, the students indicated they’d like to try a stronger tape like duct tape. They were given 20 additional minutes and a limited amount of duct tape to make changes.
