Mary Bernadette Von Lindern

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Mary B. “Mare” Von Lindern on May 2, 2023, in Chardon.

She was born Nov. 3, 1959, in New York, N.Y., to Edward, Jr. and Marilyn (nee Kipp) Von Lindern.

Mare attended St. John’s Elementary School in Waterloo, Belgium, and graduated from Indian Hills High School in Oakland, N.J. She then received her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Kent State University. While at Kent, she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and after graduation she became the House Director/Mom at the Delta Gamma House.

For the last 40 years Mare was the physical education teacher at St. Mary Catholic School, in Chardon, where she was loved and adored by all. It was at St. Mary that she was affectionately known as “Coach” by her students, whom she considered her family, her “kids.”

Prior to that, she started her teaching career in Hackensack, N.J., and also in Lakenhealth, England, at a Department of Defense School for Girls and Boys.

Hard-working is an understatement when it came to Mare! When she wasn’t at school, she had multiple part-time jobs, ranging from catering and bartending to working at YMCA as well as summers at Sea World.

Mare was an active parishioner of St Mary Catholic Church in Chardon. She had a huge heart, was selfless and caring, and volunteered a great deal of time for various events, including CYO, the Annual Appalachian Toy Drive and Lenten Fish Fry’s (which she never missed working one since its inception). On Thanksgiving, you could find her delivering meals or serving them at local shelters.

She is preceded in death by her parents, but survived by her brothers, Ned, of Oakland, N.J., Tom, of Glen Rock, N.J., Steve (Nancy), of Budd Lake, N.J., Andrew (Darlene), of Wayne, N.J.; sister, Kathy (Steve), of Midlothian, Va.; and nieces and nephews, Jessie (Chris) Buford and Alex Haut, Ethan and Molly Von Lindern, Amanda and Steve Von Lindern, Devon Drew and Olivia Von Lindern.

All who knew her will miss her deeply, but take comfort knowing how much joy Mare brought to their lives because of her dedicated, one-of-a-kind, giving nature.
