State Power of the Pen

West Geauga Middle School seventh-graders Gabby Ohlsen and Janna Winningham advanced to the state Power of the Pen competition.

Approximately 2,500 students participated in the district level tournament, which was narrowed down to 1,200 students who moved onto the regional tournament. Finally, only 500 writers qualified for the state tournament. Of the 500 students, only 50 seventh-graders moved onto the fourth round. Of the 50 writers, only the top 12 are recognized. Winningham came in seventh place in Ohio as a top writer for Power of the Pen 2023. Thank you to teacher Lisa Zimmer for her leadership and support.

Westwood Elementary News

Westwood Elementary School recently completed an exciting week full of activities for all students.

The second-grade class presented their “Wax Museum” projects to the first-graders. The project involved researching a famous, influential person; designing a timeline of their life; writing a presentation; and dressing up to resemble the person. Students did an excellent job on their presentations.

The first-grade class hosted “Ask the Expert.” Students researched an animal and then designed its habitat, created a display board and prepared a presentation. They shared their knowledge with classmates and invited family and friends to Westwood to take part in the event.

Kindergartners received a special visit from students of the West Geauga High School Marching Band, along with Band Director Jason Branch. Band members shared a little bit about their instruments with the kindergartners and played some great music outside in the Westwood pavilion. Students were engaged and excited to learn more about future opportunities available to them in the West Geauga music program.

Finally, to complete the week, Westwood students had a surprise visit from Jungle Terry, along with his reptile and animal friends. The all school assembly was educational and of course highly entertaining.
